Old Site Need Access or Takedown Help
-
Hi folks;
One of our clients has an old outdated wordpress site made by a long-gone volunteer that is confusing visitors when they search Google and elsewhere so they go there rather that the official website. Can anyone provide us with the method to get access to the old site on or just to get it taken down? The board is okay with going either way. Even if we gain access we would just take it down anyway so it falls out of the serps because it’s jamming our outreach.
Since there is no one at the foundation who has the credentials and there is no way to contact the host (wordpress.com) it’s kind of a sticky spot.
Thanks for any assistance with this.

Hi there,
What’s the URL of the site in question?
I’m also adding the ModLook tag to your thread, so a staff member can more easily see it and stop by to help you out.

Please do not just post a modlook tag on threads like these ones. -

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/This is wordpress.COM support. We cannot answer any questions posted here accurately until we have the relevant URL and have confirmed hosting.
We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
(1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
(2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM. That support is found at http://wordpress.ORG/support/
(3) Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.com/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page. What is the exact URL starting with http:// site you refer to please?

Since there is no one at the foundation who has the credentials and there is no way to contact the host (wordpress.com) it’s kind of a sticky spot.
Companies, groups and organizations of any kind do not own blogs.
Every WordPress.COM blog has a sole owner. It is the person with the WordPress.COM username account who registered the blog under that username account and a single associated email address, and who is the original Admin of the blogs registered under that username account.
You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard. The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with the actual blog’s name in that URL.
After the blog’s owner logs in clicking this link should display all blogs registered under the same username account, including the hidden ones: https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs&show=hidden
If the blog’s owner does not see the blog here http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/ then they need to follow this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#my-blogs-dashboard-visibility
If the log-in information is lost they need to visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
If you do not have the required access you need to contact the person who registered the account and site under it and have them transfer the sites to your username account by using this process. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
If you check each and every possible email address and account and are not successful gaining access to the blog(s) then you must complete the form for account recovery at this link https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery and submit it to the Account Recovery Staff, and provide proof ownership, so they can contact you by email ie. not on these public support forums, which are available to everyone with internet access.
NOTE: Support Staff cannot breach the privacy policy and provide the log-in information. You have to provide proof ownership to Account Recovery Staff to gain access https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/

Thanks Timethief – I think.
Yes I know the difference all too well thanks. This is a blog hosted on the the .com service: https://lafondationlouisiane.wordpress.com/The ‘board’ operates the foundation that the original blog was publishing about. The person who made that original blog on wordpress.com cannot be contacted since none of the current board members knows who exactly that is.
We’ve tried various ways including some of those listed, to track own the email owner of the wordpress.com account but no luck.
We also tried recovering the password several times with different possible emails – including the gmail address posted on the contact page of the old site.
Thanks for the account recovery link. I’ll take that route and perhaps it will work.

Hi there, @rovinnet
I do see a recent password reset request on that account, so one of the emails you had tried is the correct one. That is as far as I’m able to help you in this case, though :)
I suggest going through the spam folders and any automated filters on the email addresses you’d tried to reset the password to see if you can find it. You can also try searching for “wordpress.com” in the email accounts to see if that turns up the reset email.
If you can’t find it anywhere, and the Account Recovery option also does not work, please let me know.
