I’ve noticed that the spam filter creates too many “false positives”. But I haven’t checked for a while, so some old messages marked as spam seem to have been deleted before I reviewed them. Is there any way to get them back?

“No” there is no way to get the spam comments back.
Frankly I’m amazed you think there are too many false positives because that’s not what my over 6 years of experience indicate at all. Your blog is new and you don’t seem to be aware that people are hired to submit spam because I found the following spam comments which you approved and posted:

You can change your other comments settings if you wish but I don’t recommend doing that.
Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It’s removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.
If Akismet has sequestered spam comments simply click “empty spam” button. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.
On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

Well, then I’m less intelligent than Akismet, because I didn’t recognize those comments as spam (and frankly, I still don’t). But the comment by “Mark” on JULES ET JIM was categorized as spam as well, and you seem to agree that that IS a genuine comment?
I’ve read about Akismet, and I’m aware of all of the other things you wrote. I just had a question about the one point that I asked about. And my blog isn’t new (just not visited much, as it seems).

They are certainly spam comments and if you allow loads of spam comments on your blog Google will soon drop you down the bottomless well as it will see your blog as spam. And if you approve spam comments that Akismet has marked as spam you will get a warning from WordPress. Genuine people very rarely comment. Spammers comment constantly with the same comments. The email address is usually a clue to a spammer too, as is the username.

Attracting followers that comment takes lots of time an effort. It takes months of posting frequently to attract viewers who will actually submit comments. Reciprocity is alive and well in the blogosphere; social networking is strictly give to get. The best way to get comments on your own posts is to leave meaningful comments on blogs with similar content to what’s in your own blog. Set a goal of commenting on “X” number of blogs weekly and carry through. Best wishes with your blog.

“Genuine people very rarely comment”
That’s surprising, and rather disappointing. On other sites, such as YouTube, many genuine people comment. Not much point in publishing anything interactively, if there is no interest in discussion.

Wow! you experience of youtube and mine aren’t the same. Youtube is full of some of the most vile troll comments I have ever read. Some people I know have closed comments on their videos there to stop the trolls who post obscene and asinine off-topic comments.

If you don’t mind me saying so, relying on the field of dreams notion ie. “build a blog and they will come” is bound to result in disappointment. The minute after you publish a post you need to actively promote it throughout social networks. Even after you do that for about every 700 – 800 page views you will get only 1 comment.

Seems so. I’ve had trolls, but they have been very few, in contrast to literally hundreds of very nice comments (every few days), and some even quite intelligent and interesting. :-)

I have no wish to advertise myself. I thought that people would find the posts if they were interested in a certain topic and searched for it (eg a film that is discussed). That’s how it works on YouTube.

I’m averaging one comment per 700 views across all my blogs, and the same on YouTube. YT gets a lot of comments because you’re looking at popular videos.

My YouTube channel is at 1,100 views and no comments. My main site has one comment for ever 3,000 to 4,000 page views maybe. I have a history site that has a higher number of comments per page views but it has a lot on a small town and some people that were born there liked the pictures – my main site – people just come for the info –

Of close to 900 comments, 5 were legitimate and I deleted 2 of those as unresponsive and argumentative, leaving a total of 3 Approved.

aplantage, anything that is a generic attaboy, like ‘Great Site, I’ve bookmarked it and will return often’ without making a specific reference to content within the post, is most likely Spam.
You’ll also learn to recognize them based on the type of email address they’re from. They become very obvious after a short time.
