old stats page and other functins
-
I’ve been with WP for several years. I feel that sadly the new stats page, the now missing notifications list (not the one from the drop down menu) and this horrible beep beep boop thing are a huge step backwards for you guys. Functions are being taken away, there’s less information available, and overall the new WP looks like WP for dummies. I truly hope that you won’t take away the old stats page. I, like many other WP bloggers, prefer it to the new limited version. I have less functions to post a page/post with the new editors. I cannot compare the today’s data to the yesterdays on the new stats page; I also cannot move these boxes of sub-data like Countries that I don’t use. I can only minimize, yet still it takes space on my screen and I have to scroll and click more and more just to see what I could easily see on the old stats page. My question is: are you planning to remove the old stats page for good?

A reply on another thread written by a Happiness Engineer on Jan. 5, 2015: en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/massive-changes-to-the-wp-interface/page/16?replies=456#post-2197149
“At least one (possibly both) of the older stats pages should be retired at some point.”
Other Staff have stated that the classic (old) WP-Admin pages will not be removed, so that would include the very old Stats page (without the map).
I’d be interested in the answer to your question, too, in case WP has changed whether or not they will “retire” the old Stats page with the map. https://wordpress.com/my-stats

dandelionsalad, thank you for the link, it helps with understanding what’s going on with the revisions to the dashboard etc. The old Stats page is definitely superior to the new narrower and less functional version. I suppose it’ll be too much to ask when the WP staff is preparing for the next revision. That would give us an idea when to expect more changes. I also miss the Edit in the left hand drop down menu.
-
That was a good thread with lots of complaints and responses.
I do suggest if you haven’t already, is to bookmark the link to the old Stats page and use it when you want to access your stats.
I don’t know what you meant by “… miss the Edit in the left hand drop down menu.” Where are you when you are missing this function?
-
I will spend more time reading through that thread. The Edit option used to be in a menu on the left side where My Sites is now. You could click this particular Edit on any page or post on your blog regardless where you were on that page/post (no need to scroll to the actual Edit button). That was a very useful function b/c sometimes pages are very long and it was handy to just click on that Edit from where you were. Sorry if I’m not too clear on this, it’s been a while since I’ve actually seen this Edit, it’s not something that has been recently removed.
-
Unfortunately that thread is now closed… I was hoping to suggest to add a link to the old notifications list in the new drop down notifications list. The new version is shorter and could work as a preview, some users may find it enough, and others could click on the link to view the extended notifications list. It’s more complex and allows to view more comments feedback etc.

A couple months ago WP did remove the Edit button on the main blog but after a large outcry from users reinstated it. So if you are looking at a particular blog post or a page, on the left-hand side under My Sites, the Edit button appears. It is extremely useful especially for long posts and it saves you from having to scroll up or down to find the Edit button on the post.
Please check to see if it’s located on your blog posts/pages as it should be there.
Are you using the classic editor for editing your blog posts, or the new, too-blue, BBB editor? There is a work-around that another blogger made so we can always use the classic editor for editing our posts. Let me know if you are interested.
-
I always use the old Notifications page, https://wordpress.com/notifications/. I use bookmarks so it’s one click to whatever page I need to use, notifications, stats, new post, published posts, etc.
Many bloggers complained about the Notifications page link being removed from the “new” Notifications button.
-
I am using the classic editor, and you’re correct: I can see the Edit now, thank you!. I suppose since it wasn’t there for a while I didn’t even realize it was back. That’s a good sign, perhaps other suggestions and criticism will be properly addressed as well.

Re: notifications,
just recently discovered the link you’re mentioning. Strange it’s not incorporated into the new look. What could WP possibly try to accomplish by limiting functions for the bloggers? Maybe, make some of those functions billable at a later time? -
Staff have repeatedly stated in the Forums that they will not remove the classic WP-Admin pages. Finding them may be difficult especially for newer bloggers as WP replaced links to go to their “new, too-blue” pages that are not as functional as you mentioned in your first comment.
Do you edit older posts often? I suggest using the work-around to always use the classic editor for editing posts/pages and making new ones.
-
I edit older pages and less frequently older posts. I stay in the classic mode, but I’d love to know about the work-around so that I don’t have to switch from BBB to the classic too often.

Here’s the link to the work-arounds: https://tpenguinltg.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/classic-editor-workarounds/
I use the Greasemonkey user script and it works better than the cookies that WP used before they eliminated it.

I usually keep a tab open with the dashboard in the classic mode, and from there any function is available in the classic mode. The stats page is always opened in a separate tab.
-
You are most welcome, glad to help out.
Good idea to keep the classic dashboard open for easy access to the classic pages.
