old-style figures
-
I’m having some problems in trying to use old-style figures. The CSS code I’ve tried is
p { font-feature-settings: onum; }But it’s not working. I’m using Minion Pro in the Fresh News theme.
Any suggestions?

Either you’re checking on a browser that does not support it, or Minion Pro does not have this feature. Not sure which one is happening here, though.
-
Thanks, but I’m almost sorry you mentioned other browsers. I just took a look at the blog in Internet Explorer (my usual browser is Chrome), and instead of Minion it’s displaying (I think) Helvetica! Are there usually such dramatic differences in rendering on different browsers?

Here’s Typekit’s browser support:
http://help.typekit.com/customer/portal/articles/6786
So I assume Minion Pro should show up correctly even in IE unless yours is a really old version (5 or below). IE has been quite problematic for web development, though, and as it normally has a really low percentage of users, it shouldn’t be too much of a worry if IE can’t display sites correctly.

Thanks again for the advice. But to go back to my original question: I wonder if anyone else on this forum has suggestions about old-style figures. Was my CSS code wrong?
I’d be very surprised if Minion Pro doesn’t support such figures, because I’ve used it in InDesign, and the OS figures were very much in evidence there.

I did a bit of a detective work and this page (which is a demo for Myriad Pro)
http://frgr.de/myriad_figures.html
seems to give a hint:
One important point: when building your kit, use the “All Characters” option, as the alternate figures are not being served otherwise.
I tried the correct CSS syntax for onum as mentioned here:
http://clagnut.com/sandbox/css3/
-moz-font-feature-settings:"onum" 1; -moz-font-feature-settings:"onum=1"; -ms-font-feature-settings:"onum" 1; -o-font-feature-settings:"onum" 1; -webkit-font-feature-settings:"onum" 1; font-feature-settings:"onum" 1;but that didn’t work on your site.
So my best guess is that WordPress.com’s version of Minion Pro served from Typekit does not come in all characters (probably for file size consideration), and so it does not contain the old-style numbers.
As a normal user I can’t really confirm this, though. I’ll notify the Staffs and see if they can verify.

Forgot to mention one thing. This particular advice:
One important point: when building your kit, use the “All Characters” option, as the alternate figures are not being served otherwise.
does not seem to apply for WordPress.com users, as I can’t find the option anywhere. Custom Design -> Custom Fonts admin screen shows no such option. So we’re out of luck here until a Staff can confirm.
-
OK. I continue to hope that there is a solution. Minion is a font that just cries out for old-style figures.
-
If you need assistance with fonts/CSS, it would be best to post your question in our CSS Customization forums. We have excellent staff and volunteers over there there who can help you out.

Forgive my confusion, but isn’t that where this discussion is already taking place? I see this header on my screen right now: “WordPress.com Forums » CSS Customization.”
-
Yep. I don’t know much about CSS, but I can confirm this is in the right place. Sorry I can’t help more.
-
Oh my mistake, I thought this was in the support area. We don’t get a lot of modlooked threads in the CSS forums. :)
-
Not to worry. But the question remains: has anyone successfully used old-style figures in Minion Pro?
-
P.S. I just did an experiment in the Pilcrow theme with Minion Pro. I am able to get the old-style figures there with the code
font-feature-settings: "onum"So that narrows it down: it means the problem lies in the Fresh News theme rather than Minion.
-
Just for the record, this is the message I have received from WooThemes (who created Fresh News): “I’m not able to provide support on WP.com themes.”
-
For help with Fresh News, you can post in the special premium theme forum for that theme at http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/fresh-news .
That’s where the theme designers and others familiar with that particular premium theme will provide theme-specific support.
