Old theme Fresh & Clean, homepage thumbnails question

The old Fresh & Clean Theme, creates small thumbnails with a blurb from the post on the homepage (for non featured posts). What I didn’t like is that it seemed to be random as to how much text it would add before putting the “continue reading”. So sometimes the text would wrap and put like just a few words under the thumbnail or other times it stops at the bottom of the image. I know this is a long shot, but is there custom CSS that I could add to make a hard stop for how many characters it would display? Since the thumbnail is a fixed size I would like the text to stop uniformly even with the bottom of the thumb.

It’s not random. The number of separate items (words, hyphens, dashes, etc.) displayed in an excerpt is 55. That’s been a standard at least since I started using WordPress.com in 2008, though it’s understandable that you wouldn’t be aware of that. The number of items will be 55, with some exceptions, including the following:
- There are fewer than 55 “words” in the content of the post. Example: your featured (sticky) post, “Working on the website.”
- A More Block or More Tag has been inserted into the post.
- On certain themes, if a custom Excerpt is created, then it may display instead of the automatically generated excerpt in some locations.
Since the thumbnail is a fixed size I would like the text to stop uniformly even with the bottom of the thumb.
You might try adding custom excerpts, as described in the Excerpts support page. I haven’t tested to see with custom excerpts display on the blog page on the Fresh & Clean theme. You may make the length of each custom excerpt the same.

Possibly, but custom CSS is out of my realm, so I’ll leave that question for other responders.

Thank you for this incredible information. On this theme, I tested doing the excerpt, and it worked perfectly. So as long as I do this extra step and write the appropriate length excerpt, I can have it ‘fit’ the way I would like!
