old way of writing posts

    I’m wondering if there is any way to revert to the older, simpler version of creating and customising posts that existed before the new version came in. TBH the new one is far too complcated for my needs, I don’t want mysterious unlabelled boxes popping up everywhere when I try to do something quite simple? Thanks

  • Hi @litgaz, could you tell me more about the mysterious unlabeled boxes? I’d be glad to check on that for you and get it rectified.

    For the time being, you can also use the older editor through https://wordpress.com/wp-admin … but we’ll want to get any issues fixed so the new editor is comfortable for you, too.

    Well, I suspect I’m old-fashioned & my needs are minimal. I used to be able to just start typing a post (or cut and paste from Word). Then I could quickly do the categories & tags from the right, and add a small thumbnail pic anywhere I liked by positioning cursor and right click, insert media…
    Now I need to create boxes all over the place before I can do anything, and there are so many it’s confusing. I have to hunt for the categories & tags on the right. And inserting images in the place I want them is well-night impossible. Plus all the symbols are unlabelled until I hover the cursor over them.
    The link to the older editor actually seems to take me to the new one I’m complaining about.
    Sorry to be a grump, but if there was a simple way to set up everything like it was, I’d be very grateful to be told how to do it. A quick glance at my blog will show you how simple I keep it. Many thanks for your help!

    To keep it simple when creating a new post click on the + in the square and then “classic”. That works in a manner you are accustomed to. You can add images there too. Tags and categories are on the right but you may have to click on the 3 dots top right to see them.

    Memo to staff: I think the main problem people have with using the Block editor is the extra key strokes now required and the endless moving the mouse around the screen. Can people really use this format with a phone !?!

  • Thanks @themagicrobot that is feedback we have shared with our product team, as it is something other site owners have mentioned as well. :)

    If you use the WordPress App on your phone, it has fewer blocks than the version you have in your desktop browser, since as you have guessed it would be difficult to offer the full suite of blocks on a small screen like that.

    @litgaz
    What if you visit wp-admin (either the posts or pages list in that interface) and then click this option shown in my video: https://d.pr/v/3fFUn2

    Thank you so much for that little clip: it looks exactly what I’m after and I hope it will remain there. Will use it to do my next post, with fingers crossed!
