Older posts are not displaying properly
-
When I click the ‘Older Posts’ button on my blog, and try to scroll down to see the older posts, the screen suddenly hides them. When I click on ‘Older Posts’ again, what appears is a much older post — i.e. the screen is hiding a number of posts in between.
I am using The Spectral Theme for my blog, and the address is http://postcardsfromlalaland.wordpress.com.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, feel free to add a ‘modlook’ tag (on the right side of the screen) if you need help from staff. We’ve found this through your Twitter help requests and are investigating this issue for you.
-
Just as an update, I’ve duplicated this behavior and filed a report. I did notice it doesn’t happen with other themes, for what it’s worth.
-
Thank you :) I’ve considered switching to another theme, but would really prefer to stay with Spectral, if possible.

Spectrum is a retired theme that no longer supports all wordpress.COM features. Though the issue has been reported by supernovia know that the the recommendation is to switch to using another theme.
Switch themes is easy to do and free of charge too. :)
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.
Note that every theme will have a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site page that you can consult. Here’s an example:

I would second going with a new theme if you can, even if it’s just because newer themes will be responsive so they’ll be easy to read on mobile devices.
If you’ll tell me what you really love about Spectra I may be able to recommend something.

Thank you for the advice! The biggest thing I like about Spectrum is the features I can set up in the right-hand margin — my avatar, my “Favorite Topics” icons, etc. I’d like to find a theme that would let me keep those features.

Looks like you’ve been trying on some new themes while I was away with my kids. :) There are a lot of options out there that offer a banner image and a sidebar. I’d recommend picking something that is responsive so your site is also mobile friendly. Here are a few free options, and there are other premium themes as well:
