Older themes missing

  Hi, I’m wondering whatever happened to some of the older free themes at WordPress.com? I remember in an account I used to have there were over 200 themes to choose from. When I started a new account, I only see 90+. I was hoping to use “Origin,” but I can’t seem to find it. Is it offered in one of the paid plans?

  There are more Premium themes than free ones nowadays. New sites may see slightly fewer themes available than older sites that are still able to access retired themes that weren’t retired when the site was created. At https://wordpress.com/themes/free if you toggle between free and premium you should see 133 free themes and 230 Premium themes available.
  Was the “Origin” theme ever available here at WordPress.com? It is certainly still available as a WordPress.org theme and could be used here by upgrading to the Business plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
  There a number of grid-based Premium themes here along with a few free ones such as Cubic and Pictorico.

  Origin for WordPress.com seems to be retired as mentioned on this page: https://wordpress.com/theme/origin

  You can always choose from available WordPress.com themes here: https://wordpress.com/themes/

  Alternatively, you may consider creating a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site and use Origin theme available here: https://wordpress.org/themes/origin/

  Oh, an update. As themagicrobot mentioned, you can upgrade to the WordPress.com Business plan here https://wordpress.com/me/purchases to install custom themes.

  When you upgrade to a WordPress.com Business plan, download Origin from here https://wordpress.org/themes/origin/ to install it.

  Thank you, @themagicrobot and @strikebuys for your clear responses. I realize now that longtime members of WordPress are able to access the retired themes but newer members can only see the new and updated selections. I am considering self-hosting as I do prefer the layout of the Origin theme.

  You might want to have a look at Colinear, a modern theme similar to Origin in style, but with updated typography and theme options. The demo shows two sidebars, but you can opt to display just one, like Origin.

  Through the Content Options panel in your Customizer, you can choose to display excerpts on the blog page, like Origin.
