one feature change at a time in the customizer
-
I’m not happy with having to change each feature in the theme customizer one page at a time. We used to be able to do this all on one page and in one go.
What happened?
Why did it happen?
Is this an anomaly affecting only my blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi timethief,
Can you give an example of what you mean by having to change features one page at a time, and how it differs from how things worked before? I want to make sure I understand the problem you’re having.

Hi there,
I am here https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php?return=%2Fwp-admin%2Fnav-menus.php
If I click to change the tagline and title here https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php?return=%2Fwp-admin%2Fnav-menus.php
and then click the “save” link
and then click the <—- I end up here
https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.phpI think I ought to end up here instead
https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fonekoolblog.wordpress.com%2FAm I wrong? Or is my approach to using the customizer off base?
-
Here’s something else that’s strange. When I go here https://wordpress.com/themes/ I used to be able to click a theme link and arrive on the theme description page for it like this https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/lovecraft/. But now I click a theme and sometimes I end up in the Reader instead.
-
Thanks. Quick question about this step:
and then click the <—- I end up here
https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.phpAre you clicking the back button in your browser, or the < arrow (the one next to “Customizing Site Title, Tagline, and …”) in the customizer? This is the < arrow I mean: https://cloudup.com/cAj_R5l4W9f
If you started at https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php, opened the customizer, and then clicked the back button in your browser, it should take you back to https://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php since that’s the previous page you were on.
Within the customizer, you can use that < arrow in the customizer to navigate between the different sections (for example, to exit the tagline and title section and go to the fonts section).
Here’s something else that’s strange. When I go here https://wordpress.com/themes/ I used to be able to click a theme link and arrive on the theme description page for it like this https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/lovecraft/. But now I click a theme and sometimes I end up in the Reader instead.
Well, that’s definitely odd. I just tried that by going to https://wordpress.com/themes/ and clicking on Lovecraft there, and I took me to the theme info page: https://wordpress.com/themes/lovecraft/
Are there particular themes that keeps happening with? Or is it inconsistent?

No
or the < arrow (the one next to “Customizing Site Title, Tagline, and …”) in the customizer? This is the < arrow I mean: https://cloudup.com/cAj_R5l4W9f
Yes
Re: the weird theme thing
When answering support forum questions I used to go https://wordpress.com/themes/ and click a theme image and connect immediately to the detailed theme description page, rather than the two links provided now which are “demo” and “activate”. Clearly neither one of those will get me where I want to go and are not applicable when answering questions. However, now the images of the themes are no longer linked to their relevant theme description pages so clicking one ends me up in the Reader. Trust me when I say this is driving me crazy! -
Bottom line: To avoid go crazy I am now typing in theme page URLs like this example: https://wordpress.com/themes/lovecraft but why do I have to do that? Why can’t the theme images be linked to their relevant detailed theme description pages like they were before?
-
That’s really strange. When I try this out on my end, both of the actions you describe work as expected for me:
When I click the < arrow it goes back to the main screen in the customizer, not back to the page in WP Admin.
When I click on the theme image or name in the theme showcase at https://wordpress.com/themes/ it goes to the theme page, not the Reader.
Have you cleared your browser cache recently? I just want to rule out any issues with cached data in case that’s interfering.

Hi again,
Under this account, rather than under timethief, I am testing the action bar. Maybe this is a factor here or maybe not. When I click the … under the follow in the action bar and use the link provided here I do connect to the detailed theme description page. I don’t use an iPad or Iphone to blog. I use a desktop PC and here are my details:
Operating System
Windows Windows 7Screen Resolution
1024 x 768Web Browser
Firefox 39.0Browser Size
1024 x 641Color Depth

It’s set to automatically clear every time I leave the internet. I’ll manually clear it now and let you know if that makes any difference.

I logged out and clicked the Lovecraft theme image and connected to the detailed theme description page!
I cleared everything in my browser and went to log in again and I got this error message:
ERROR: Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser. You must enable cookies to use WordPress.
It’s not true. I have enabled third party cookies.
The setting is “always” and keep until “they expire”.I have enabled _ Clear history when Firefox closes.

Now that I am logged in on the first go around I clicked the Lovecraft theme image here https://wordpress.com/themes/and connected to the detailed theme description page here https://wordpress.com/themes/lovecraft/!
But when I tried a second time I clicked the Lovecraft theme image here https://wordpress.com/themes/and connected to Reader here https://wordpress.com/!
Argghhh!
-
oops! Sorry about that lack of space.
But when I tried a second time I clicked the Lovecraft theme image here https://wordpress.com/themes/ and connected to Reader here https://wordpress.com/!

Thanks for those details! I tracked down the issue, and for some reason when you have a single site on your account those links are getting messed up. (If you look at the link the theme showcase is trying to send you to, you’ll see that your site’s URL is getting inserted into the link like this: https://wordpress.com/themes/http://onekoolblog.wordpress.com/lovecraft/ ) I’ve reported that to our team so they can look into that.
Are you still running into trouble with the customizer, or is that working for you now?

re: the strange theme linking
Thanks so much for your help with this.re: the customizer
I haven’t had time to try it out again but I will after this weekend and that’s when I’ll report back. -
Hi timethief,
Our team looked into the theme showcase issue — the new showcase available at https://wordpress.com/design resolves that link problem, and once it’s done it will replace the showcase with the problem at https://wordpress.com/themes so you won’t run into that problem anymore.

@rachelmcr
As this annoying situation with me being redirected to the Reader when I try to locate theme pages is ongoing I am following one blog only https://horizonfeedback.wordpress.com/ and I have posted there requesting the removal of the action bar from this account. -
P.S. Make that two blogs as I chose to follow my main blog at http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com as well.
-
Hi timethief,
Just to clarify, the issue in the theme showcase is separate from the action bar — the problem you found with the links to theme pages in a problem in the current theme showcase at https://wordpress.com/themes regardless of whether you’re using the action bar on your account. That said, I’ll certainly check with our team about removing the action bar if you don’t want to test it anymore. (Thanks for your feedback about it!)
