One of my domains that I use was one I had registered through my old web host if ix webhosting. I was surprised to get a notice to day from them to renew “artbtdesmond.com” … as I dropped my contract or all business with ix webhosting. WordPress accepted my “artbydesmond.com” domain without a problem, when I added that domain to my wordpress account. So, I just don’t know where my artbydesmond.com stands, when I am not going to renew the registrationit through ixwebhosting. By the way, I thought wordpress was connected to ix as having the same IP address, but I was told”no connection” before. Looking for how to proceed. I believe my domain for the art site is good. Just need some advice.
    Sincere Regards, Tim Desmond

    Hi Tim,

I don’t know this for sure as I can’t see into your account, but I’m guessing when you moved your site to WordPress.com you used the Domain Mapping upgrade(http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/#i-already-have-a-domain) to connect artbydesmond.com to your new WordPress.com site. It worked great then because you owned the domain (even though it was registered elsewhere) and were able to map it using the instructions listed above. Now, your domain has expired so even though you didn’t change any of your WordPress settings, you no longer own the domain, so you no longer have the permissions necessary to map it to your site.

All of that having been said, it looks like the domain is available again so you should be able to register it through WordPress.com so you won’t have to deal with your old host. Try following the instructions here to proceed: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

Let me know if I’ve misunderstood anything, or you get stuck along the way, I’ll be happy to continue to help.

    Hi Liz,

As far as I know and remeber from a year ago two, when I used the domain at wordpress, I did not “domain map it” …. If that meant retaining all the other hosted sites pages and html data, I did not retain those. I just walked away from all those and started from scratch with wordpress formats.

    Hi Tim,

I think I must have explained myself poorly.

The actual content of your website (all the files, site pages, html data etc.) is separate from your domain name. I understand that you walked away from all of that stuff and started fresh on WordPress.

What I’m trying to determine is if you want your domain name (which is the address people type into their address bar to get to your site) to be artbtdesmond.com or if you are happy with http://www.artbydesmond.wordpress.com.

If you are happy with http://www.artbydesmond.wordpress.com you don’t have to do anything, your old address just expired and your old company was telling you about it.

If you want your old address (artbtdesmond.com) to “point” to your WordPress website (http://www.artbydesmond.wordpress.com.) that is possible with the Domain mapping upgrade.

I’m happy to walk you through that if you are interested, but if you are happy with your web address being http://www.artbydesmond.wordpress.com, we don’t need to worry about that step.

There is no question you walked away from maintenance of your domain name and you lost it because you did not renew it with the company which was managing it for you. You are going to have to try to re-buy it, IF it’s available.

Liz, Thank you, yes, I am happy with WordPress version as artbydesmond.wordpress.com. But too, if I can register it with your instructions above, I’d like to. It doesn’t expire with the ix webhosting registrar of Tucows Domains Inc. until October 1, 2014. Do I have to wait for the expiration date to proceed?

Raincoaster, I appreciate the advice, but I haven’t lost the domain yet, unless expiration dates are meaningless.

If the domain hasn’t expired, you can absolutely use the domain mapping upgrade right now so that artbtdesmond.com points to http://www.artbydesmond.wordpress.com/. What that means is when users type either url into their address bar they will be sent to your current WordPress.com site.

Here are the instructions for domain mapping when you already own the domain: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain.

All of that having been said, when I look up the whois record on your domain name it shows up as available. If that’s the case you would need to repurchase the domain and map it to your WordPress account. This is slightly more expensive, but requires less technical know-how. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

I recommend you start with the second option. Read the documentation first of course, but it’s a much simpler process and if it turns out you already own the domain it won’t let you proceed so there is no danger of buying the domain twice.

    Hi Tim,

I was looking at this again, and realized there was a typo in your first mention of the domain you own. It’s typed artbtdesmond.com but should be artbydesmond.com. Not a huge deal except that I didn’t notice when I was talking to you about your options, and I was using copy/paste to check on the domain.

All that means is you are correct, the current domain hasn’t expired and if you want to “map” it to your WordPress site now you can do so using the first set of instructions I gave you in the message above.

    Sorry about any confusion.
