One of your hosted sites is sending email spam — against TOS?

I’ve been receiving email spam from one of your sites. It’s not clear from your TOS whether this is prohibited — is it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

(To be clear, consentbands.com is my site, not the spamming one.)

    Hi there!

Can you share the link to the site you’re referring to? And what kind of email are you receiving from that site? We’ll be able to point you in the right direction once we have more information about this.

    Thanks!

Certainly! The site is solvaudio.com. The email is along the lines of:

“I am writing to you in case you are in the search of a Complete Music and Post Production Audio Solution tailored to your Documentary.” [etc.]

This was sent to an email address that’s irrelevant to their business. (Not that it matters — as repeat, unsolicited email of this kind is illegal per the CAN-SPAM act.) They continued to try to sell me after I told them to remove me from their list. I can provide full copies privately if you like.

    Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the link! I just wanted to confirm that the site was indeed hosted by us.

Since we are unable to help with TOS issues in the forums, would you mind sending a detailed report to our Trust and Safety team using this form? https://wordpress.com/abuse/

    Thanks!

Will do (although not right now). Thanks!

Reopening this topic. I’m afraid I couldn’t find an appropriate category for my report on https://wordpress.com/abuse. The Technological Harm -> Spam report form asks for “The specific URL of the post, page, image, or comment”. Obviously, email doesn’t have that.

    Any ideas?

Thank you for providing additional details! WordPress.com offers a subscriber feature that automatically sends new posts to subscribers. However, after looking into it, I’ve found that there are no published posts on the website (only a homepage and a contact page), and there are no subscribers listed on their Subscribers page.

Based on this investigation, it seems unlikely that the emails are originating from the website hosted on WordPress.com. It’s possible that the sender acquired a “cold contact sales” list elsewhere and is using a separate email marketing service.

Major email services like Salesforce, Hubspot, MailChimp, etc., usually include information in the email footer, such as “powered by.” If the company removes this text, you might identify the service by clicking the unsubscribe link and checking the URL of the page it leads to.

As the site on WordPress.com doesn’t seem to be the source of these emails, determining the service responsible could be crucial. Once identified, you may refer to their Terms of Service and reporting mechanisms to file a complaint.

I hope this explanation clarifies the situation! Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or if there’s anything else we can assist you with.

Yes, I agree that the emails aren’t being sent through WordPress.com. That was my original question: Whether a company would be breaking your Terms of Service if they spam through another service, using *your* service to reap the gains of their spam. (Some old-school ISPs had such clauses. I don’t know how common they are today.)

    Hi there!

I just sent you an email requesting a copy of the spammy email you received. Could you please check your inbox and reply there?

    Thanks!
