One Website – 2 distinct "Posts" areas.. not multisite?

I’m a custom theme builder for wordpress, but running into a situation where I need to run two blogs under a single site.

I’m making a business directory that is run via blog, using filters to display on a certain category, etc. But they also want a “blog” where they can publish traditional articles.

If they are both in the same “posts” sidebar option, it would get confusing for them I feel… the articles would be mixed up with the business listings.

I can’t use business listing plugins as non of them are up the snuff.

Multisite is a little overkill.. and again, don’t want to confuse the end client….

Is there any way to run two physical blogs in the same wordpress install with separate “posts” control panels?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I suppose I could make another wordpress install in a subdirectory called “directory”… then run the same theme, interlinked properly to go to the other. I am doing a couple of server level password protected intranets using the same theme, just modified.
