Online Portfolio

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, I wanted to do an online portfolio and registered a domain and hosting with wordpress.com but found out it more of a blog system posting rather than a photo gallery to display my work. Is there a theme that is suitable or do I have to do it in wordpress.org instead? I have just registered the domain 2 days ago and requested for a refund, it says refund pending but when i clicked in again to see it shows not eligible for refund in the cancellation info.
    What should I do now? Can I get the refund of the domain so I can host myself at wordpress.org? I cannot transfer domain until 60days, but i just registered it 2 days ago.
    Please help as the themes in wordpress.com does not seem to be suitable.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I hoping it to be more of a gallery style layout rather then individual blog posts with date, author etc.
    Just 2 or 3 categories at the menu like e.g. breakfast, lunch and dinner.
    then each tab click in just photo galleries of all the pictures in the category?
    Any idea? thanks

    and will i be able to add in slider on the main page? or those plug-ins can only be done on wordpress.org?

    Hello there! You can turn all our themes into websites. They do not have to include blogs/posts at all.

    The best place to browse themes is right here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/

    I have done a search for you for a theme with a slider on the front page:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/

    I have also searched for themes that are geared toward Galleries and Images:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/photography+art/

    Take a look at the theme demos and you’ll find a great theme that will suit your needs. Please let me know if I can be of assistance. All the best to you!

    Hi thatrobyn, thank you for the reply.
    I am currently using Hatch theme and I have looked through the themes and did not find what I am looking for. Most of the themes even thought they look nice and are kind of like portfolio, they are still more of a individual post. Meaning, on the home page if I click the picture, it will bring me into the individual post. I think a pop-up light is more suitable? Like when i click into the menu tab (e.g. Art) , it should show all the photos in “Art” and when i click a picture, it simply enlarge it either on the page itself or a pop-up lightbox and you can just click <prev or next> to go through all the pictures?
    And for the menu should I post the photos under “post” or “page”?
    If i post under ‘page’ it would not show up on the main front page, if i post under ‘post’ then i becomes a blog post when clicked in?

    I see you’ve switched to a different theme, did you found what you were looking for?

    You can find some more information about portfolios on WordPress.com at:

    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/04/11/portfolios-on-wordpress-com/ and https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/portfolio/

    If you rather have a dedicated Portfolio page within your site, you can use the Gallery feature to show a carousel slideshow of your portfolio items: http://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery

    Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

    Hi, yes, I have changed to another theme. Not the perfect solution but we figured a way to make it look and work as close to what we wanted.
    I have also managed to insert a gallery into my page based on the link that gave me, thanks.

    Few questions I encountered:
    1) is there a way to remove the leave a comment box at the bottom of each ‘page’? I tried to see under setting>discussion, but the box allow others to post comment is unchecked, but under my page theres still leave a comment box?

    2) Is there a way to remove the small footer that say ‘blog at wordpress.com | customised illustratr theme’ at the bottom of our website?

    3) for the home page, we have to select either to display the latest posts or a static page, actually we don’t want to show anything, just the menu tabs that, is that a way to select show nothing?
    What I did was I created a page with no content and no title and use that as the static page for the home page, seems ok but just want to know if there a option to check for that?

    4) also I noticed theres a template option under page attributes when editing a page, theres default template and portfolio page template, I tried both but don’t see anything different accept at the bottom, one puts No entries found! the other have leave a comment option.
    May I know what are the differences for these two templates?

    Main concerns are point 1 & 2 as we want our website to look as clean and sleek as possible. Please advice, thank you for the prompt responses :)

    You can disable this per page in the page editor. Follow the instructions on this page on how to disable it on your pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments

    2) Is there a way to remove the small footer that say ‘blog at wordpress.com | customised illustratr theme’ at the bottom of our website?

    All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide or alter text or links for the footer credits or the toolbar. Modifying the style using Custom Design of the footer text (i.e. colors and font size) is fine as long as it’s still readable

    You are correct, you need to choose one of those two options. What you did with the empty page is a good solution :)

    Hi, I tried changing the style of the footer credit text but could not find any options in the Custom Design menu. Do we have to change the CCS coding in order to edit the colour and font size of the footer credits?
    Thanks :)

    Do we have to change the CCS coding in order to edit the colour and font size of the footer credits?

    Yes, this requires to modify the CSS code. You can copy and paste the code below into your CSS section in the Customizer:

    .site-info {
    float: left;
    padding-bottom: 20px;
    width: 50%;
    line-height: 40px;
    color: #000;
    }

    Use this color picker to generate a color code and then replace it with the #000 part to change the footer credit’s color:

    Thanks for the info, is there a way to remove the grey box for the footer? Can I either remove it so theres just the footer credit without any grey area or I can just change it to white? what is the css code for that?
    And what is the padding-bottom and line-height for? I tried changing the px but scare it might get misaligned.
    Sorry am new to this, but you guys have been really helpful! :)

    Hi, I managed to find the code to change the background colour of the footer.
    #colophon {
    background-color: #FFFFFF;
    }
    So its ok to change the footer text colour and font size as long as it is still readable?
    .site-info {
    font-size: 12px;
    color: #000;
    }

    Cheers!
