Online Store Website

I have created a wordpress.com site, but my goal is to turn my website into an online store. However, before I pay money to upgrade my site, I wanted to make sure that I will be able to actually turn my site into an online store. I don’t want to have to create the online store from scratch though. Is wordpress a good site to use to do this or should I try another site builder? If I should, does anyone have any recommendations of modern, good quality, yet simple website builders with online store (including the price?)
