Hi there! The WordPress credits cannot be removed from our bloggers’ sites, even with theme upgrades.
Here is an excerpt from our Current Terms of Service:
11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.
Please let me know if I can help further. Thanks so much.

You may wish to launch a self-hosted site, so you have more control over what displays on your pages. When you build your site with any host, you have to play by their rules. But, if you build and manage the site on your own, you get more flexibility.
Here are the differences between hosting here at WordPress.com and self-hosting your own WordPress site on a different server:

As I mentioned before, you cannot delete the WordPress.com credit from your footer.
I f not I would like to cancel my account.
If we cancel your newly-registered domain, it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again once canceled.
If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site, using the Domain Administration tool under Store > My Domains in your dashboard.
For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/However, if you don’t want this domain at all, you can cancel it for a full refund if you purchased it within the last two days. To cancel the domain, go to Store > My Upgrades in your dashboard. Locate the domain you want to cancel in the list, and click on the Cancel and Refund link near to it.
This cannot be undone, so please follow the on-screen instructions carefully before you confirm the cancellation.
Please let me know how you’d like to proceed and I can help with the process. Thanks!
