open in new tab

I have gone to screen options and ticked on the Link Target option and clicked Save. It still doesn’t show the ‘open links in new tab’ option.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

To clarify, I used to have this option available and now it is not there. I have never changes themes, so if that is the issue, that means the theme I use took that option away?

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to help you with this.

I have gone to screen options and ticked on the Link Target option and clicked Save. It still doesn’t show the ‘open links in new tab’ option.

Just to clarify, is this when you’re editing/writing a blog post/page, or are you referring to a different area of the dashboard? I ask for confirmation since you mention “Screen Options,” which doesn’t appear on the block editor screen.

If you can share a screenshot, that would help us understand this better.

    Thanks!

I was referring to the article that Help sent me to. The setting is in Appearance>Menus>Screen Options.

  • Got it, and you’re looking for that option when setting up a menu? Since you’re using an older theme, you’ll find the menu options under Customize > Menu > click on Primary. Then you can click on any one of those links, and you should see an option for opening the link in a new tab.

Are you seeing that? And, is that what you were hoping for? Let us know and we’ll go from there.

Thank you for helping. No, when I add a link inside a sentence, I want that link to open in a new tab. Like if I write in the body of the blog, “… go here to see the recipe.” I want the word ‘here’ to be a link that opens in a new tab.
I used to be able to set up the link and check a box to make it open in a new tab. Now I have to create the link, then go re-edit that same link to get to the check box.

  • Hi there,

I used to be able to set up the link and check a box to make it open in a new tab. Now I have to create the link, then go re-edit that same link to get to the check box.

That is the current process for editing links, and was a change that shipped with a recent update to the editor. Devs are currently looking at revising how this is done to make it easier to edit link settings so when that change is made we are happy to update you here on this thread.

However, the settings panel you have shown in your screenshot relates to menu settings specifically, and those preferences do not affect how hypelinks (in the page editor) behave by default.

    Thanks!

That would be great, thank you.
I’m sorry I listed the wrong settings. That is where the Help feature sent me and I didn’t realize/know it was only for menus.

  • No need to apologize! It sounds like we may have suggested the wrong doc there. If you have any other questions let us know, thanks!
