Open in new tab by default?

Recently the UX of the Reader has changed. Instead of opening a post or preview within a box inside the browser, I am taking directly to that article (or the preview) inside my existing WordPress tab. Attempting to view the entire article takes me out of WordPress entirely.

The option to open in a new tab has moved to the … at the top right of posts in the reader.

I really dislike this change. It is less intuitive and natural and forces me to take extra steps just to open articles in separate windows. Pretty much, whenever I forget to manually open a post in a new tab, I read my article and move on from WordPress entirely.

Usually I browse and just open lots of articles to read, all very fluidly. I have since stopped.

My opinion, of course. But, at least for me, a detrimental change.
I reacted similarly to when the stats page was changed; a lot of nice features were added as well as several frustrating design choices; so I stopped checking stats and reduced my posting (I can’t remember when last I posted; many times just formatting is a frustrating; and whatever happened to the function that suggested similar articles to link to?). UX is important!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s also in a new “visit” link at the bottom right of each post. Can you give that a try? It should be working… let me know if it’s not working for you and please tell me a little more about your browser setup in that case.

There’s also another trick you might like, which is a built in feature of most browsers, and that is to shift+click on the post title (or command+click or control+click, depending on which browser you are using) to open the post in a new tab or window. I like this option very much for the flow you described (opening several articles in separate tabs and then reading through them) because in my browser the tabs open in the background so it nicely separates scanning images/titles with reading and viewing blog posts directly when I want to do that.
