Open SILESIA with URL to call up sliding left menu
-
Dear Happiness. I have recently switched to Silesia which I love almost as much as my dog.
1. I would like to be able to open with a URL that already calls up the sliding left menu already open. Is there a way to do that?
2. Some of you other themes permit a “signature block”, which is very handy. I cannot find one there. that possible?
With kind thanks/Eric Britton (World Streets . . one of your great public interest blogs)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Eric,
1. I would like to be able to open with a URL that already calls up the sliding left menu already open. Is there a way to do that?
There isn’t a way to do that with a URL — the Silesia theme is designed to start with the left menu closed, and visitors will need to click the plus (+) symbol to open that menu.
2. Some of you other themes permit a “signature block”, which is very handy. I cannot find one there. that possible?
Do you mean the box with information about the author, for example at the bottom of the post in the Twenty Ten theme: http://twentytendemo.wordpress.com/2009/07/27/layout-test/
That isn’t a feature of the Silesia theme, but another way to do this is to use a shortcode to add your public profile to the end of your posts. You can use this shortcode for that:
[gravatar_profile who="worldstreets"]If you put that at the end of the post, it will automatically add your public profile there. You can manage your profile from your settings here: https://wordpress.com/settings/public-profile/
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Dear Rachel. I am back and I believe that I may have made a major screw-up with http://worldstreets.wordpress.com/ and the Silesia theme.
When I call up the site, I find (a) that my side bar menus have been entirely re-ordered. Worse (b) when I go into the Widget menu to fix the two , I find that both menus have lost all of their contents.
Is there a way that we can get back to the excellent configuration that I lost about 11:00 this morning, Paris time.
Thank you. It is kind of urgent.

Sorry for the delay. I can’t seem to reproduce your issue but if you still encounter this then please try clearing out your cache and cookies using the guide below:

A. I eventually just went in and reconfigured all the widgets manually.
B. BIG BIG PROBLEM TODAY!!!
My blog at http://sustainabiltyseminar.wordpress.com/, which contains the entire curriculum for an intensive university course starting tomorrow, has suddenly started to have problems with Silesia.
1. the text is no longer visible in the postings.
2. The sliding left menu shows up behind the text of the main frame -rendering it and the site unusable.
Please help ASAP otherwise the course will be entirely sabotaged.
PS. I still love WP but today it hurts.

Other Silesia blogs working perfectly:
– http://gatnet.wordpress.com/PS. Firefox does not permit the user to activate the sliding left menu. Oops.

Eric,
You had a tag in one of your left sidebar widget that was unclosed. It was a font color=”white” tag without a proper end font tag.I went ahead and closed the tag for you (it was just missing the slash) and your site appears to be displaying as expected.

Dear Spencer,
This is enormously kind and helpful — and at exactly the right time. My seminar class is able to continue their work with the site, thanks to a stranger name of spencerwberry.
As to my failure to close the guilty tag, ouch! Shows you what happens when an at best half qualified schmendrick attempts to do “better”
That said, I think this Silesia template is excellent for the purposes of both our seminar and the modest “Open Classroom” approach to sharing our knowledge with others who may not be able to spend three days in Paris in the summer.
Again, kindest thanks for your generosity.

Eric,
Three days of summer in Paris sounds amazing!I’m glad we could sort out your issue in time and that you are pleased with the Silesia theme.
Let us know if we can help with anything else.

SORRY STAFF, BUT HERE I AM AGAIN WITH A REAL TIME PROBLEM (of my own making, but . . )
In working with the MENUS bar, I inadvertently erased all of my careful work and despite my tries it is gone.
Is there some way in which someone can turn back the clock to yesterday evening and get us the old menu back. My class and I will be very grateful.
Apologies for causing work.

Eric,
Are you asking about the sustainabiltyseminar site still? We don’t store revisions for the menu bar (so no way to turn back the clock), but I did notice that you have two menus (Top and 2July14), is it possible what you are looking for is in the Top menu?
If so, you can select it from the pulldown in the top part of the menu editor located in the Dashboard>Appearance>Menu. You can also assign it to be your Primary menu at the bottom of the Menu editor (don’t forget to Save!).
Hopefully it is there – if not – you will want to rebuild it manually.

Oops. Silesia’s nice sliding left menu bar does not seem to work with Mozilla. (I have tried it on several computers just to be sure). Am the only one? Is there a workaround for this? Kind thanks/Eric Britton

Eric,
Which flavor/version of Mozilla are you asking about? I tested it with the most recent version of Firefox, their most popular browser, and the left sliding sidebar worked without issue. We won’t be able to fully support old versions of browsers that do not have all the modern web technologies, but most sites will degrade gracefully, meaning they’ll still look acceptable, but the more modern pieces of the site just won’t work.
You can read more about supported browsers in our documentation.
