I get the same message too. I would love to be able to track my comments…but I gave up and just use my name & url instead. or I use my blogger account that redirects it to my wordpress blog. crazy.

I suggest WP.com stops offering OpenID. It’s a major pain in the anatomy seeing that “You need to sign in” page over and over. Especially when logging out, logging in and reloading has no f***ing effect.

I’m having the Blogger problem and @joeholland’s advice worked for me. Having my blog open in another tab is the only way to get Blogger to accept the OpenID.

To add to the above: Blogger now accepts my OpenID, but it uses “procrastiblog.com” as my display name instead of “Chris”. I can’t find any way to change this preference. Is it a problem on the Blogger side? They say they use “the name sent to us by the OpenID provider.”

I can’t get OpenID to work with WordPress either–I have tried keeping my site open in another tab and no go; I just get the same ‘you must be logged in’ message. Logging in with Livejournal works, but I don’t use that blog anymore–I have a WordPress blog which has its own url, http://www.vert-a-go.com, which I would rather use. Any ideas?

I just use the anonymous “NAME URL” option. So I don’t get an avatar? So what? One would think this would be an issue for Automattic, because they WANT people to use their avatar system…but it’s not being fixed as far as I can see.

Here is how I tried to reproduce the problem:
- Logged out of WordPress.com
- Went to a test blogger site: http://codeleter.blogspot.com/
- Tried to leave an OpenID comment, selecting WordPress from the menu and typing hugthebug
- Since I wasn’t logged in, I saw a page very similar to this one: http://faq.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/you_need_to_sign_in.png
- I logged in to WordPress.com in another tab
- I refreshed the previous page (the one saying “You need to sign in”)
- I was presented with a page letting me confirm my nickname and full name to be used with that blogger.com comment
- After clicking on Yes, my comment showed up with the nickname linked to my wordpress blog URL.
Also tried that with a blog with mapped domain, codeleter.net: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126
I know that the fact that it worked for me doesn’t automatically mean it works for you. That’s why I want to ask you for some help in order to find the cause of the problems.
If you are experiencing problems, I will ask you to:
- See if your commenting routine was different from what I described above.
- Try to post a comment to my blogger test blog: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126
and report here what happened and step-by-step description of that you did and what happened

@nbachiyski: I had the same experience following your instructions. It didn’t work if I only logged into the Dashboard. I needed to be logged in and visiting the blog itself.

I made another test, using a normal, non-admin account, clerared by both cache and cookies and tried logging in at both wordpress.com and dashboard.wordpress.com (not the blog itself). Again, I didn’t have any problems.Can you be more specific about what exactly you are trying and how it fails?

@nbachiyski: The differences in my experience may be related to the setup of my blog.
1) There are two wordpress.com account associated with the blog: procrastiblog and clconway. I usually sign in as clconway.
2) There is a custom domain associated with the blog: http://procrastiblog.comHere’s what I am doing.
Attempt #1 (http://procrastiblog.com)
1) Clear cache and cookies.
2) Visit https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126.
3) Type a comment. In the OpenID box, I put “http://procrastiblog.com”.
4) Submit, I get “You need to sign in.”
5) Open a new tab. Go to WordPress.com. Sign in as “clconway”. I’m now at http://wordpress.com, with “Welcome back, Chris. Your blogs: …”
6) Reload the sign-in tab. “You need to sign in.”
7) Click on my blog name in the WordPress tab. Now I’m at the dashboard, http://procrastiblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/.
8) Reload the sign-in tab. “You need to sign in.”
9) Click on “Visit Site” in the Dashboard. Not I’m at http://procrastiblog.com.
10) Reload the sign-in tab. My comment goes through.Attempt #2 (WordPress/clconway)
1) Clear cache and cookies.
2) Visit https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126.
3) Type a comment. In the OpenID box, I click “WordPress” and enter “clconway”.

4) If I go back to the other tab and reload, I get “You need to sign in.”
5) If I click on my blog name, and visit the blog’s Dashboard, then reload the Blogger tab, I get “You need to sign in.”
6) If I click “Visit Site”, and reload the Blogger tab, I get “You need to sign in.”Attempt #3 (WordPress/procrastiblog)
If, instead of “clconway”, I enter “procrastiblog” in the “OpenID->WordPress” field:1) Clear cache and cookies.
2) Visit https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126.
3) Type a comment. In the OpenID box, I click “WordPress” and enter “procrastiblog”.
4) Submit, I get “You need to sign in.”

clconway, great description! By following it I managed to reproduce and hopefully fix the issue.
All these cases should be working now.

In Scenarios #1 (OpenID: http://procrastiblog.com, WordPress.com user: clconway) and #3 (OpenID: http://procrastiblog.wordpress.com, WordPress.com user: clconway), everything is the same up to step 10. At that point, I now get “You do not own that identity.” It used to work at step 10!
In Scenario #2 (OpenID: http://clconway.wordpress.com, WordPress.com user: clconway), everything is the same (it doesn’t work).
I tried logging in as user “procrastiblog”, but that didn’t work either. It seems that account isn’t actually associated with http://procrastiblog.com, somehow. (I probably did this on purpose and have forgotten about it.)

I tried to post a comment to blogger test blog: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1504961872775281277&postID=1449318644434822126 and got message “incorrect openID url” – this is the message I usually get whenever I try to leave a comment on Blogger. Is this because my wordpress blog is not yet public?

I have a different OpenID problem: when I try to post a comment on various friends’ blogger sites, which was working fine a few days ago, it now says “You do not own that identity”. Considering I’m logged in with that identity, I’m wondering if it has something to do with my other domain name for my website, though this has never posed problems in the past. Does anyone know if this is a temporary error or something I need to find a way to fix?
