Opening links in new windows
-
Hi,
I’m brand new at WordPress and cannot figure out how to make links I create using the link tool open in a new window. I’ve searched the forums for the answer but it creates more questions. People refer to something called a Blogroll, but I have no idea what that is. I don’t see anything by that name on my page. Searching for an explanation hasn’t been much help. People refer to it but don’t say what it is or how to find it.
Can anybody help?
Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
There is a Links Sidebar in The Dashboard (Probably already Know this).
All Links
To have your link open in a new window, when adding a new link just select “_blank” from the “Target” Option.
Add A Link
if you are referring to a link on your website then you will need to go into the HTML editing mode and add target=’_blank’ html attribute to a ““/Anchor tag, if you know html.Feel Free To Reply with additional Question if this didn’t address the issue.

Thanks for your reply, Lance. I can see I need to be more descriptive of my problem.
When I’m using the Edit Post page there is a tool bar at the top of the text entry box. One of the items in the tool bar is a link tool. When I highlight text in the text box below and then click the link tool an Insert/edit link window opens up. When I type or paste a URL into the URL box of this window and click Add Link, the text which I’d selected earlier in the text box turns green and is now linked to the URL I entered into the Insert/edit link window. I don’t see how to edit the target of links created this way, how I can make them open in a new window.
You wrote “if you are referring to a link on your website…” Ummm, I’m not sure what you mean by web site. I’m referring to my wordpress blog. That’s a web site, isn’t it? What else could I be referring to? What else is there?
You also wrote “you will need to go into the HTML editing mode …” I don’t see how to do that either. I can’t find any reference in the Help section to an HTML editor.

Hi,
Ok, Now i know what your referring to,
During my tinkering to find what related to your question i went into that menu.
In the ” Edit Post page there is a tool bar at the top of the text entry box”, i say a option/checkbox under the link that clearly says
“Open link in a new window/tab” (something i just realize after using WordPress for so many years).
If you click this when creating think then i am sure you will achieve your desired output. As Reference to my mention of website, Blogs are still websites and as such i was referring to your blog although admittedly too vaguely.
Also All WordPress Editors have a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIYG) “Visual” Editing mode and a “Text” HTML View, Take a Look at the Top Right of The Aforementioned menu.
Hope that Cleared up the issue.
Lance

@russgreene – Also see this doc that might help. It has screenshots as well as a video towards the bottom showing how to create links. http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

Yes, I see it now. Thank you! I just didn’t notice it before… there is a check box to Open Link in a New Windw/tab” just below the text entry field where you put in the URL!
Problem solved.
Thanks everybody!

So I can add a link to my blog post, but when I preview the post the linked text is giant. How do I get the text to look normal when I am making it a hyper link? Can someone tell me what I am missing?
-
@momformation – Do you have a link to the post? Is this showing up when you are copying and pasting into the editor? Or are you writing in the editor directly?
-
@daphnec2002- I was previewing it after typing it in the editor section. In desperation I asked my husband for assistance and it looks like the formating was a function of the theme! So, now I am shopping for a new theme…unless you know a way to change the way a hyperlink looks/appears in a theme?
