OPML error: The uploaded file exceeds the MAX_FILE_SIZE directive…

  • Unknown's avatar

    Here’s the entire message:

The uploaded file exceeds the MAX_FILE_SIZE directive that was specified in the HTML form.

I want to just import the contents of one folder from Firefox. I installed Christopher Finke’s OPML exporter (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2625) for Firefox and it seems to export -something- but WordPress won’t take it.

How can I export just one folder’s contents of Favorites from Firefox into the Blogroll for WordPress?

    Thanks

Well heck, I tried to remove some of the other tags and all I got was an error message.

    Sorry about the cross-posting.

Is your blog hosted at WordPress.com? If not, you need to read the sticky thread at the top of the forum marked Read Me First.

At WP.com we have a very limited amount/kind of uploads. If it’s not a supported file type, you won’t be successful uploading it. The list of supported types is just above the Upload box on the Write page.

@raincoaster: The issue is with importing a OPML file into the Blogroll. The option is available under Blogroll -> Import Links.

@moonbatwingnut: Try cutting down the size of the file. The error says that the file is too big (file exceeds the MAX_FILE_SIZE). It seems like you are trying to import too many bookmarks. You don’t want your blogroll to be that big anyways. If your one folder contains just a few links, it’s possible that exporter is doing more than you think. Open it into Notepad or another text editor and see how much is in it.

FYI: I have not used the exporter or any others. I’m just going by that error message.

@abbydonkrafts: I opened it in Notepad and saw that it’s just crammed with text that includes ALL of my Favorites plus a lot of description. No wonder it’s too big. What I want is to import just the links and headers from one folder in my Firefox Favorites that I call Top Blogs, and which has about 30 links. I highlighted that folder when doing the export, but obviously the plugin doesn’t limit itself that way. The plugin developer offers to help, so I’ll ask him.

@raincoaster: Yes, it’s hosted at WordPress, but is still in development. I’m just following the directions!

D’oh. Glad abbydon stepped in; I was completely misunderstanding. Sorry about that.

30 links? Might it be faster to do it manually than to wait for the plugin developer to respond?

  • Unknown's avatar

@raincoaster: I hear you, but that 30 or so will change on a regular basis, so I’d like to set up a method to do this as automatically as possible. It’s so easy to manage bookmarks in Firefox, then exporting that would be the smart way to go.

And, um, okay, now I see how the forum tags work. So it’s okay to crosspost as long as it makes sense?

  • Unknown's avatar

The tags don’t matter so much. And that remove/delete error has been a problem for a few days now.

You’ll definitely need to ask the developer to provide the option to select a specific folder as well as exclude the extraneous information. I had a feeling it was dumping all of your favorites into that file.

    316 KB

But I don’t want all of it anyway, my favorites folders have been growing for years. The HTML file is 1800 KB. I guess I could go into the OPML file in Notepad and try to strip out everything I don’t want, but that defeats the whole idea.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry about that. I re-read your post and edited my reply. But yeah.. you don’t want all of it, so the developer will need to provide options.

M’kay, sometimes it’s good just to know that I’m not being dense.

    Thanks for your help!

You’re welcome! I hope the developer can get the plugin fixed up for you. :-)

This is going to be absolutely no use to anyone posting here but for parsing out certain items in big files – linux is ideal. A couple of lines of code would do what the OP wants straight away. :)

After sleeping on it the fix came straight to mind. Funny how that old brain works.

I made a COPY of my Firefox favorites file and put it in a separate folder. Then I used Firefox’s bookmark manager to delete everything except the bookmarks I wanted. Used the OPML exporter there to create an OPML file that imported into my WordPress blogroll. Kewl.

But then I decided I wanted some of my other favorites too and repeated the process. Unfortunately the importer doesn’t check to see if an entry already exists, and just adds all the links. So I ended up with two entries for the bookmarks I’d imported earlier. No biggie to delete them, and much faster than entering one at a time.

Did I mention that you should make a COPY of your favorites first in Firefox? Very important!

Technically it can be done in Windows, too, (although not as easily as Linux) with either JS or VBS files. Either method requires some scripting skills.

  • Unknown's avatar

Do you happen to know how to write scripts? That seems like a bit of work everytime you want to export that one set of favorites. It’d be easier to invest in making a script that you can run each time you need to.

  • Unknown's avatar

I can re-write code once I understand the syntax, but I’m no good at all at writing it from scratch. For now the easy fix would be to delete all my blogroll in WP and re-import the favorites I want from Firefox. The only bummer there is that I’d then have to re-categorize. Hmmm, maybe I’ll just settle on a list and leave it alone.

EDIT: To complete the process, you then go back and move the COPY of the original Firefox favorites file back to the original location, over-writing the one that you slimmed down for the export.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah. If you are going to be importing periodically, you might want to give it just one category name. You’d be wasting a lot of time if you then broke them up into more categories.

Have you also thought of just making a Page for the links? Then you could copy directly from the HTML bookmarks into the Page editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I’ll leave it mostly alone now, my bookmarks don’t really all fit in the default ‘blogroll’ category. But I don’t see a way to rename a category – not possible?

EDIT: I think the easiest workaround is to just be cognizant of this process when adding potential WP bookmarks to the FF favorites. From now on I’ll use a separate folder in FF to keep new bookmarks that I may add to WP. Then it’s easy to just add that folder’s contents now and then.

  • Unknown's avatar

That would be the easiest. I try to organize my favorites based on the intended purpose.

You may also want to look at using del.icio.us and using a unique tag. Then you can use the RSS feed for that tag. There’s probably a RSS to OPML converter out there. That would make it super easy for you to do exports.

I’m trying to migrate all of my favorites to del.icio.us for portability. The “post to del.icio.us” bookmarklet makes it real easy to favorite something to the site.
