Optimize Images
-
I have this website: https://gamiast.wordpress.com/ and you can see very fast that my images are both terrible and wrong. I tried to follow optimize images guides where i resized the pixels with a resize website/app then i compressed it with a website. Seems like i have done something very wrong. The most obvious is that since i resized the Among Us picture it isnt as big as the article in both the homepage and inside the article.
So now i need someone to tell me step by step what i should. Lets use this picture as an example: https://images5.alphacoders.com/110/thumb-1920-1104367.jpg
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The image there https://gamiast.files.wordpress.com/2020/12/among-us-1.jpg is very much too small (396px wide by 223px high), so it’s being scaled up to fill the space.
You can find your theme’s recommended image sizes at https://wordpress.com/theme/hever
In particular, the recommended Featured Image size is 2000px wide by 1200px high.
-
So to optimize images i should resize them to the recommended size (pixels) and then compress them?
-
Our system will take care of scaling the images as necessary. If you want the best quality, upload images which are no smaller than the recommended size, and we’ll take care of serving up smaller sizes as necessary.
-
So theres no need to compress or do anything with an image if its very big like 2MB or anything, wordpress will do this automatically, because normally big image files increase loading times?
-
Correct, we’ll take care of optimization on our end, that includes compression and only serving the image size that fits the viewing device.
-
Are there any place i can see recommended sizes on wordpress for logos and normal pictures like the ones you see on my homepage and contact page.

Hi there, every WordPress.com theme has a showcase page with this information. For Hever which is in use on gamienz.wordpress.com, you’ll find it at https://wordpress.com/theme/hever but let me repeat the Quick Specs here
- The main column width is 740px.
- There is one widget area in the footer with a column width of 314px.
- The recommended Featured Image size is 2000px wide by 1200px high.
From my own experience, if you are expecting a lot of mobile traffic even 2MB per image is pretty heavy. You can resize your images in an external image editing program to double those pixel width dimensions and then optimize them to be as light as possible. This is also beneficial to you as it takes up less space in your site’s Media Library.
Hope that helps.

Ok, now i understand, but i have one last question: Are there any recommended/best picture file (png/jpg) ?
-
And also “You can resize your images in an external image editing program to double those pixel width dimensions and then optimize them to be as light as possible.” i dont understand the double pixel width dimensions, and “then optimize them” macmanx said wordpress will optimize images for me so that i dont need i guess?

Hello again, I mentioned double the width because of retina screens which display at 144ppi rather than the standard 72 ppi. You can learn more about image optimization in this guide https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/
staff-blorbo mentioned

makes me wonder if he is referring to this:
Let’s wait to hear back from Staff.

Hi @gamiast
And also “You can resize your images in an external image editing program to double those pixel width dimensions and then optimize them to be as light as possible.” i dont understand the double pixel width dimensions, and “then optimize them” macmanx said wordpress will optimize images for me so that i dont need i guess?
To clarify, for most images on your site it is recommended to upload a large image, as WordPress will automatically resize it to fit the layout of your theme… so you do not need to worry about creating on your end images that are the exact size your theme requires.
I’m not seeing any images on your site (https://gamienz.wordpress.com/) at the moment however. Are you having an issue with a specific image? Can I see this on your homepage? Or is it a specific place I need to look at?
Thanks for pointing it out!

Hi again @gamiast
I noticed from this post and your other post (about fonts) that you seem to be worried about the speed of your site? one thing to be aware of is that it is almost impossible to get a perfect score by using a tool like GTmetrix.
If anything, they have an incentive to show a less than perfect score, in the hopes they will turn you into a paying customer of their service. For example, many popular sites also score poorly on this test, but that does not prevent them from being successful or ranking well in Google Search.
For example these site gets terrible scores on GTmetrix, but are very popular and show up prominently in Google search results:
gameinformer.com – test results
pcgamesn.com – test results
theverge.com/games – test resultsWith that in mind, my advice is to take speed test results like this with a very large grain of salt. There is nothing wrong with your site and for me it loads quickly and without issue.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the responses!
So if i want to upload an image i want to use on wordpress, the optimized size would be 2000×1200 no matter what i want to use it for? And what if i just find 1920×1080
pictures, because this size is much more normal?Btw i fixed my website now and you can take a look at the images and see if they are right now.
-
Hi there,
The recommended size for the featured images is 2000x1200px so that they’re displayed crisp in all screen sizes. Using a slightly smaller image size such as 1920x1080px won’t have a significant effect.
