Optimizing existing images

    Hi,

I’ve had a blog of my son for our family for years, and have typically just uploaded cell phone pics as-is. As a result, the site is pretty slow and uses a lot of space. Few questions:

    1. Is there a way to optimize images that have already been uploaded? I’ve read all this, but this is all prior to uploading: https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/

    2. If the answer to #1 is no, is there an efficient way to get access to the full images in order to optimize them? I can’t seem to download the full image once it’s there (ie: download, optimize, re-upload), and finding all the images again will be near impossible.

    3. Last, is there a way to view images sizes in the media library? I can the dimension, but not the size.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi there!

I’m afraid that there is no way to optimize the images after you’ve uploaded them so yes, you would need to re-upload them and then switch the image on each post to the re-uploaded, optimized one. This wouldn’t be done automatically. If you remove an image from the library, it will also disappear from the post to which it was added.

You can see the size of the image from WP-admin. To reach that, you’d add this after your site’s address: /wp-admin. So, for example, rupretbranson.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php will get you directly to the media library where you can click and edit any image.
You’ll also see that there are some bulk actions that you may find useful.

Also, remember that having a paid plan, you can access support directly from https://wordpress.com/help/contact – it’s faster than posting on the forums :)
