optimizing images for search engines
-
To quote Raincoaster in answer to another forum question:
“It’s just the whim of the search engines and your optimizing the image for them, eg using captions, alt text, filename, description, etc.”
I usually put captions on my images, but never add alt text, file name, or description, b/c I don’t know what they are or what they’re for. Can anybody enlighten me, please? TIA

If you put captions on your images using the WP.com Caption Code, then you’ve got Alt text automatically; it’s the same as your caption. It doesn’t look good with my custom CSS, so I always strip it out and then have to add alt text, which is that text that pops up when you hover your cursor over the image.
Filename already exists. It’s the name of the actual file, the image itself. Description, I have been TOLD, is what programs for the blind read out, and thus it could be a literal description of the picture. I see Picapp always includes a whole paragraph about what’s in the picture, where it was taken, and who took it.

raincoaster, thank you for clarifying.
I guess I use the WP.com caption code (just by typing captions?), so my images have alt text and filenames automatically, but I could add descriptions. I will have to look up Picapp, but at least now I understand why I might want do do that.
As always, I appreciate your help.
