Welcome to the club. My site has more than 250 posts, so I feel your pain.

There is a longer post here, titled “classic editor” if you want to join that. One of the posters seems to have found a workaround although it doesn’t work for me for some reason. WP.com has not responded to help requests yet, so I think they are ignoring us in the hope that we will either shut up or go away. (I’m in the process of “going away”, literally, by moving my site elsewhere this weekend because of this.)

I have been trying for years to move to another – are they called provider? wordpress was sensational at the start. I was able to ring someone at my hometown, and they would guide me on the phone. And it was set up logically, it made sense. Now its blown up and designed for monkeys. You have found one! Great. Can you let me know?

I have a ‘signpost’ in my post in the other thread that is titled I WANT TO GET BACK TO USING THE CLASSIC EDITOR ;-). Don’t want to post that info in too many places in case the Mods decide to remove it.

  • Unknown's avatar

would you send me the link?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have over 5000 posts (and pages) !!!
WP have also made it tricky for users to edit their comments unless they are familiar with HTML.

Hello @wolfganko and everyone else, after going through the dashboards of all of my current sites on WordPress.com (14 total), there was a brief period when the “Add New Post” drop-down button and the Edit in “Classic Editor” link under the Post name disappeared. However, they have both reappeared in my Posts and Pages dashboards.

All the above was checked in Firefox latest on Win10Pro PC.

Do please check your Posts/Pages dashboards again, hard refresh if necessary, and post back here if you need more help.

Regardless, the VIEW tab to switch between the Default (Calypso) and Classic (WP Admin) dashboards that was visible in the upper right corner of one’s web browser has completely disappeared. And it’s probably because of this:

And I do want to address the “alternative” Cybis mentioned here.

When you set up the open source WordPress (ORG) software on a different hosting provider, you will be using the Classic WP Admin dashboard exclusively on your site. Unless you purchase “managed WordPress hosting”, you will be responsible for your site security and maintenance. Additionally, much of the functionality included in our WordPress.com sites will only be available to you by installing plugins to get the same functionality.

Granted there are resources to assist you, like the ORG documentation and forums and your hosting provider’s support, but site maintenance and security fall on your shoulders whereas here it’s handled for us.

My 2¢/ Yes, it’s pretty darn annoying/upsetting when TPTB here decide to change something that throws us all for a loop, but there’s a lot less need for us to fiddle in the back end. /My 2¢

Try Admin / Dashboard / Settings / General: Admin interface style -> Default.

Now the classic editor ist back!

  • Unknown's avatar

But how do we edit an existing post using the classic editor?

That option was available from the list of posts/pages, but has disappeared in the last few days.

  • Unknown's avatar

Just make sure you bookmark /wp-admin/edit.php added to your site address.

@knashermac2009 Here’s my current dashboard screenshot again. When you hover your mouse over the post title, you’ll see “Classic Editor“. That was the way to open a post in the Classic Editor prior to this dashboard change.

The option had disappeared this morning, but is back now. Thank you.

I still do not have it available even though my Admin Interface is set to Default. What else is needed in order to make it appear??

justjennifer, this is not what I see in my dashboards, as I have commented at the following threads:

I would like to go back to working in “Classic Editor” – I don’t know how to navigate the new “block” changes that WordPress put on. Please put back editing in “Classic Editor” Thank you. You can reach me at (email visible only to moderators and staff)

I am unable to publish articles with the new editor since the classic editor has disappeared. Can you restore it immediately? If not, I will be migrating to another host. This is non-negotiable.

Have you tried refreshing your browser or tried a different browser or logging out and logging back in as perhaps your equipment has cached something that needs clearing?

Okay, after pulling my hair out for the past 30 hours, I can share some tips.

FIRST, if you are not seeing the fix/change yet, try flushing your DNS cache. I am only familiar with Windows, so maybe someone who uses Mac can add their procedure. But on Windows it’s this:

Right-click on the Start menu and from the list of options choose whichever of these appear, depending on your version of Windows:
    Command Prompt (admin)
    Windows Powershell (admin)
    Terminal (admin)

Any of these should bring up the DOS Command prompt. Type this following the > in the command line:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Close the DOS window. Exit any browsers that you are using. You do not need to restart windows. Log in again and see if you now see (assuming you have your settings at the Default in WordPress) the Classic Editor function again.

As for the other issues, I had ‘learning experience’ of signing up with a different host yesterday and starting the migration process which is supposed to be seamless and taken care of by the new host (this is not Managed WordPress, it is still a Shared plan which is equivalent in cost to a Personal plan here.) Ran into some issues because WP only exports XML files to the WP account owner directly; they don’t send the exports to anyone else. So the WP user needs to send the site files to the new host anyhow.

The contents of the existing Media Library here does NOT end up in the Media Library of the new host. Yes the images appear in the migrated posts BUT they do not populate in the Media Library. Because I have almost 6000 images on my site, if I want to have them accessible in WordPress.org I would need to manually upload them again myself. Yikes! I had no idea that would be the case.

It is not known how many current subscribers to a site here could be transferred to a new host. If they signed up via Reader here, they cannot be. Another problem.

I immediately saw that 3 of my 5 Pages (which are very important) had not migrated to the other host. Neither had 66 of the 258 posts, and I had no idea which ones they were because I’d have to compare and check every one rather than simply looking at the Page and Post counts on the two Admin accounts. Yet another problem.

I discovered that although I purchased my Premium theme (Olsen) here in 2021, I was never given it as a zipfile…which means I needed to buy it again (now called Olsen Pro) directly from its developer. I do think that when one buys a Premium theme here, one should actually GET the theme instead of simply buying access to it. But apparently that’s not how WP does things.

And finally I would have thrown away the 3-year renewal that I’d given WP just outside of their 30-day refund window, because WP does not pro-rate cancellations.

I will say that the other host was extremely helpful (and prompt) throughout the whole thing, in both coming and leaving as a customer. I appreciated the ability to interact with a real person for the entire time which was about 24 hours. Something that is apparently lacking here on WP. So I am committed here for at least the next almost-3 years. Yes I’d have more storage on the other host and I’d have the ability to always have the Classic Editor plugin available for as long as wordpress.org supports it. But I don’t like throwing money away either, which is what I’d be doing if I cancel my plan here at this point in time. My mom would call it “cutting off your nose to spite your face”, LOL

But WP.com had better stop messing with our Classic Editor from now on. ;-)

I had similar problems with changing, on a lower budget. Yes, in the early days, even on a free plan, I could ring someone in town. They were extremely helpful. Yes, the classic editor is far superior to anything else in the WP toolbox. I tried it for almost two days. So glad the Classic is back.
