Option to add captions gone
-
Hi
The last update has removed the facility to add captions to photos. All the updates have done this but I used to be VME tonchange the app settings so I could revert back to visual editor rather than visual editor 2. Now this has gone too!
How do I add captions now using the iPhone app?
ThanksThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to clarify, when you say the option to add captions has disappeared, are you saying it has disappeared on the
1. WordPress.com iPhone app
2. WordPress.com dashboard, or
3. /wp-admin dashboard (classic dashboard)? -
Hi – on the iPhone app. What used to happen is that I uploaded a photo, once it uploaded I clicked on it and a edit pencil icon appeared in the photo which when picked took me to a section which had options to add a caption, a title or alt text etc. The post would then show a small caption under each picture.
Since the last 5 updates this has gone but support showed me how to switch my editor back to visual 1 rather than visual 2 and that restored the setting – now this not available anymore in the app settings so I have no way of adding captions. -
Support basically just told me I can’t do this anymore but it will be fixed in a future update ! It’s been broken since November.
I am going to cancel and migrate as it’s it’s loat it’s usefulness to me now. -
Hi todaywearemostly,
I can see you recently chatted with one of our Happiness Engineers. They said they would speak to our mobile team and follow up with you by email with more information.
We’ll follow up with you there as soon as we can :)

Yes – thanks it’s just I am trying to post a blog but can’t until this is fixed.
It’s really frustrating – an update which takes away functionality isn’t great.
Thanks

todaywearemostly, gemmacevans or the WordPress.com staff should follow up over email as said earlier.
But, I have a tiny suggestion – you can publish the post using the iPhone app and then edit using https://wordpress.com/ on a mobile web browser or https://wordpress.com/ on the desktop. You will be able to add the caption to your image that way.

Yes I could but again then what is the point of an app if I then have to go into the full version to edit, may as well just write the whole thing in the full version.
I don’t have desktop – totally mobile.
I will await the update.
Thanks -
Hi todaywearemostly,
I’ve been able to find some more information for you and I’m sharing it here in case it’s useful for other people too. As you say, the previous version of the editor in the iOS app did support adding captions through posts and pages. However, the new version of the editor doesn’t.
Our developers are currently working on an update for image settings, so they match the capabilities of the previous editor. I appreciate you are keen to know when the captions feature will be available but I don’t have an exact timeframe just yet — although they have told me it should be fairly soon.
In the meantime, captions can be added through the Media area in the app. Tap on the image and you should see a ‘Caption’ link underneath.
-
Thanks – I am just dumbfounded that you would issue a update that removes functionality!
I will wait for the next update but since I have been told the same thing since November i’m not optimistic.
If it’s not working by then i’ll be looking to migrate my site elsewhere.
Thanks -
Oh and the fix you suggested for adding captions via media centre on iPhone app doesn’t work – it merely duplicates the image in the media centre and the caption is not not viable on IOs devices.
