Order of comments — FIFO and LIFO

As I understand it (based on prior comment streams), it is not possible at present to select one of two options for comment order related to blog item comments. We are stuck with “first in, first out” as opposed to “last in, first out.”
So my question is, is WordPress considering the possibiluity of an upgarde that would include both options? I have a hard time believing that this would be that difficult to do, considering the other options that are available through this service (which has some GREAT capabilities). The lack of an option to see the latest comment first under a blog item is, however, irritating in the extreme (at least for yours sincerely)

Well, this is just my opinion, but if I read a post and then decide to read the comments, I want to start at the first comment, not the last, which if the order is reversed would mean I would have to scroll clear to the bottom of the page and then scroll back up reading the comments in order.
Comments on posts very often build on one another – like a conversation and so having them in reverse order makes absolutely no sense to me.

While you may want to read the comments first to last, others clearly want an option to have the latest comment first. Surely WordPress can handle this or have they given up on improving the non commercial version here?

Ideally, it should be an option that the reader can select. Personally, when I first read the comments on a post, I want to read them in the order they were posted. If I come back to it later, I’d rather have the newer comments at the top, so that I don’t have to scroll through a long list of comments to see whether there’s anything new.

It is technically possible to change the order of comments: you have to go in and change the timestamp for every comment by hand every time a comment is made, though.
