Order of steps to create website and attach current blog to it

    Greetings,

I have started reading up on what I need to do to create a website with a WordPress theme.

I am a bit confused about the ORDER of how to go about transferring my domain name (www.cathyscholl.com) to WordPress (it’s now being used on an iweb site hosted by Mobile Me) attaching it to a new Home page and then taking my existing blog and making it a Blog Page on the new site.

I don’t want to “lose” my blog in the process and want to keep my same blog address cathyscholl.wordpress.com under the parent cathyscholl.com

There are forum topics about how to do each of these things but I haven’t seen one that addresses what order to do them in.

As always, THANKS for your help!
    Cathy

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Cathy,
There is an ICANN internet rule that you cannot transfer a domain name to a different registrar till 60 days after it was originally purchased. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar

As I have never gone through this tranfer of a domain process I will back out of the thread now and allow other Volunteers or Staff to guide you through the process.

    Hi Timethief and all…

    Thanks for commenting.

Since I already own the domain and have it registered with Network Solutions I think all I really need to do is map it to WordPress and pay the Domain Mapping upgrade for the time being. When it comes time to renew the domain name I may want to transfer it…but that can wait for now.

At the moment I am just trying to figure out what order to do the following in…
    CREATE A “static” HOME PAGE
    ADD MY DOMAIN TO IT
MOVE MY BLOG TO A BLOG PAGE UNDER THE HOME PAGE (while keeping my current blog address)

    without screwing anything up.

    Thanks all.

If you use the domain mapping upgrade all that you want will happen automatically if you first create a static home page in the blog itself on WP.com. Then do the upgrade. Ten you’re good.

Be aware that mapping a domain WILL (not can, WILL) result in screwups for about 12-24 hours and even possibly as many as 72, so doing when your traffic is low, like a weekend, is a good idea.

    Thanks raincoaster. Good suggestion.

    ALL…

So what happens to the blog when I create the static home page? I want to move it under a BLOG tab but keep the address as http://cathyscholl.wordpress.com

    Is that possible?

I forgot to mention that I also need to change my theme as part of this project.

It looks like I am shifting from Journalist 1.3 to Fusion. I have been testing Fusion with a sample site which you can see here:

    Home

So far it’s doing what I want. I guess theme change is the first item to take care of…hope my blog will transition from one theme to the other easily.

If you have any experience with theme change, domain mapping and/or creating a website and attached blog with WordPress any comments and suggestions are sppreciated. Thanks!

When you map the domain all trafic will be redirected to http://www.cathyscholl.com. You can do what you are asking about. Go to setting reading and select the static front page option. Then in the next dropdown, sellect the page you want posts to display on. Youre address for the main blog page will then be cathyscholl.wordpress.com/pagename where pagename is the page name you selected.

You will NOT have two separate URLs, one going to the blog and one going to the “website” ie the static pages of your WP.com blog.

You will have two separate URLs both of which take you to the static opening page of your blog/website. There will be a tab or link in the header or sidebar to take you to the blog posts and static pages other than the landing page.
