.org Or .com! That's the question!

    Hi,

I want to start a big project about making a website about photography in Persian language, Where I will hire editors, writers and staff to post about photo knowledge, Product review and more.

What I want is a website which we can post articles, give panel for pro members, our staff to right their article and editors will review to publish. also we want to have a members profile as well. each member has to register and log in to upload some limited number of photos and bio. We want to select pic of the day/week & month.

So That’s why I want to ask which wordpress is good choice for it ? wordpress.com or wordpress.org ?

I know the difference a bit and how .org is host based.
Also is the wordpress is the best panel we can use or there is different service better about the important categories i mentioned above ?

    Thank you
    K

Both choices are good for a personal blog or a relatively small site.

But for a big project, you should most probably use wordpress.org and 3rd party hosting.

There are quite a few limitations with wordpress.com, not all clearly mentioned. If there is a need to migrate in the future or if you want some advanced features you may get into trouble.

    Hi K,

WordPress is a wonderful option for a Photography site!
This article may be useful to you in making your decision.

Concerning a panel for “pro members” – You are able to add users on a WordPress.com site in roles like Contributors, Followers, and Viewers by sending invitations. Here is some additional information on those different roles and how you can add them.

With WordPress.com’s Business Plan, you would be able to use various plugins that could allow you to achieve the functionality you are hoping for.

Hope that information helps in making your decision! :-)

    All the best,
    Heather

Thanks Heather, some tips were useful.

the article about pro members where what exactly i want for my editors, autors&…

But i see nothing assuring about users where they log in and upload their pics.

I looked at GET HELP ( There is no direct contact email to wordpress! that’s weird! Forum is not enough for supporting clients I guess! ) and i found this article:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/user-log-in-widget?replies=3

And other articles where unsolved and closed!

So not sure if there is a plugin later we can install on wordpress.com or I have to choose WP.org!!

    Hi @kavakphotography,

I hear you describing a desire for a sort of photo social network, at least parts of it. You’re describing an advanced website, so you’ll have lots of details to figure out, but you still have both options you started with because of the power of the WordPress.com Business Plan: https://en.support.wordpress.com/business-plan/

One solution to the way you’ll build your site is to use either WordPress.com or a self-install and use the plugin BuddyPress. BuddyPress automates a lot of what you’re describing. Read more: https://buddypress.org/about/

The managed hosting of WordPress.com Business is really nice, although millions and millions of people choose WordPress.org. I’ve used both, and I love the hackability of the self-install. There are a lot of server-issues that I have worked through to get my self-installed sites built and optimized and kept up-to-date and backed up, so plan to spend a lot of time on website management if you go that route (you or a tech, of course). That all gets taken care of with a WordPress.com Business Plan, plus live chat support when you need it.

You can always try both and see what you’d prefer. Read and follow the return policy beforehand so you don’t lose any money, then try both of your options! https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

Good luck! I’d like to hear what you decide and what led you to that decision!

    Best,
    Jesse
