Hi, we own a url, http://www.pavilionpreschool.org.uk. It is a simple pdf static page hosted by a local ex parent of the Pre School. We want to change our website content, producing a site though WordPress, but still use the same url. We would get the current hosting taken down, once the new site is ready to go live. Can you advise how we do this through word press. What does “mapping” mean? Help us welcome. Thanks jo

  • Hi –

No problem. Here is how you can achieve this..

    1. Create the site as you would like it to appear on your free .wordpress.com site. Looks like you’re using pavilionpreschoolorguk.wordpress.com.

    2. Next, point the current domain to us at WordPress.com. This is what domain mapping does. You’ll need to upgrade your plan to do this. See here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Note: The custom domain that you own is all that visitors will see in their browsers once the domain mapping is connected. They won’t see your free site address. You can keep the free site private and under wraps until it is ready to be released by editing the privacy. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

    3. Edit the name servers on the domain and follow these step-by-step instructions:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    4. Wait for the magic :)

Write back to me here if you have any questions about that information. Cheers!
