Organizing media into folders

Several people have asked whether it’s possible to create folders to organize your media to make it easier to find them, and the answer seems to be (if there was any answer at all) that you have to purchase a plug-in (I don’t recall the name off-hand). But it seems to me this should be a basic feature, especially for portfolio-themed sites. It may not be so important for blogs, but it seems essential for portfolios, where you might have hundreds of images in your media collection. Hopefully, someone from WordPress is reading this and adding it to a wish-list somewhere, if it hasn’t already been added.

Or thousands! Yes, I agree that the ability to organize the media should be a basic feature. Years ago I went on at length in forum topics describing how difficult it is to find an image among thousands in my media library if I dnn’t recall the title, and how unfathomable it is that you can’t even find an image in the media library by the a search of the post, page, portfolio project, etc. that its attached to. There is no post, page, project title search option in the media library. When I questioned why this is so, I was told (by a staff member if I recall correctly) that it would be better to leave all items in the media library unattached. What a solution! I hope that I don’t have to explain again why that wouldn’t be a valid option for many of us, particularly since you can’t organize media into folders so that you know where to find them.
For my purposes, the ability to sort media library items only by month is virtually useless. Some of the other ways of ordering that might be useful:
- by attachment page
- by media item title, ID, date, or some other criteria (alphanumerically)
- by folders: which could represent categories, or post, page, etc. titles
- arranged alphanumerically
- arranged by importance
- arranged by date
- arranged by some other criteria
- by year or date
- by ascending or descending order

Thanks. I just signed up with WordPress because I want to move my work off of Flickr, which I don’t like much any more. But I’m having second thoughts now. Let’s hope someone at WordPress is listening.
