Orvis Template – Blog Page
-
Hi, experts!
I am using the Orvis template for my blog, https://mintlgy.wordpress.com and have followed the instructions to use the Portfolio Page Template for the Home page and this is fine. But how do I get the blog part of the website set up to be similar to the Orvis demo? Is this a paid feature?
Hope to hear and learn from you soon.
Thanks for your time.
Jonathan

Hi Jonathon,
To make your blog page resemble that of the Orvis demo, do the following:
1. At Customize > Homepage Settings > Your homepage displays, select “Your latest posts,” by clicking on the radio button with that label, and then saving the change by clicking the Save Changes button at the top.
2. Publish additional posts, adding media such as images, galleries, and videos into the content of posts if desired.

Hi, musicdoc1! Thank you for your response.
But the homepage setting is supposed to be set to static per the instructions of the theme.
What the instructions fail to detail (or my lack of knowledge) is how to have the blog page look like the demo.

Hi Jonathon,
But the homepage setting is supposed to be set to static per the instructions of the theme.
Wow, I’m sorry. I really goofed on item #1 didn’t I? Here’s a corrected version of the instructions:
- At Customize > Homepage Settings > Your homepage displays, select “A static page” by clicking on the radio button with that label, and then select pages from the drop-down menus labeled “Homepage” and “Posts page.” Note that “Posts page” means the same as “Blog page.”
- Save any changes by clicking the Save Changes button at the top of the sidebar.
- Publish additional posts, adding media such as images, galleries, and videos into the content of posts if desired.
It looks like you haven’t done the second part of step 1, above. I think there might be a Block Posts Block in your Blog page, which is fine, but isn’t the way to get the look of the demo’s blog page there. When you’ve selected a page as the posts page in the second drop-down menu at Homepage Settings, then your latest posts will automatically display there, AND the content of the page will be hidden. The setting essentially transforms a static page into a dynamic page that displays the latest posts.

Understood! Thank you for pointing out my missed step. I’ve made the correction but how do I get a sidebar that looks like in the demo. Or do I need a certain number of entries before the sidebar appears?

It’s odd that the Orvis theme overview doesn’t include a section on the theme’s widget area. There is only one on Orvis, a sidebar widget area. Some brief testing I did today suggests that on Orvis the sidebar widget area displays on the posts page, single posts, and static pages, except a static page set as the homepage. In addition to not displaying on a static homepage, it also doesn’t display on the portfolio page or on single portfolio projects.
In order to display widgets in the sidebar widget area, you’ll need to add some widgets to the area. For instructions on adding, configuring, and otherwise managing widgets, see the Widgets support page.
Or do I need a certain number of entries before the sidebar appears?
Have you added a widget that isn’t displaying? If so, what widget? It’s possible that a specific widget might not display until a certain number of posts or pages is published.
