Orvis theme homepage not display properly every first vist. (Follow up)

    Hi,

I attached the link for a screen capture from an iMac 2017 with Big Sur OS and browse with Safari.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tHMj2lrQF11oiOdFTh9ALxNKAB_NAp1v/view?usp=sharing

The portfolio images do not load normally at the first time landing on the home page. Images will overlap. It will display normally after refresh and remain normal for a period of time. However, the homepage problem will appear when I visit the site after a few hours.

In addition, below is the network speed information:
    – Latency (ping) : 29ms
    – Download speed: 21Mbps
    – Upload speed: 13Mbps

    Thanks!

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching out and providing the detail.

I am able to replicate this behaviour, but he page loads properly in a matter of seconds rather than hours.

Can you tell me if this happens if Infinite Scroll – https://wordpress.com/support/infinite-scroll/ is deactivated please?

I have follow the instruction to deactivated the Infinite Scroll.
The display layout seems to be normal now. I will test it with other computers and location and see the result.

Will close this issue if the page layout is OK for a couple of days.

Thanks a lot for the advise!

    Hi,

I found out that the Homepage is loading normally at first. However, when I scroll down the homepage, the images seem to be overlapping. It will be back to normal when I reload the page.

  • Hi there,

This theme uses Masonry JS to create the tiled page layouts you see on the homepage and other portfolio pages. One thing to be aware of though is that Masonry calculates layout on the fly, as content is loaded to the page.

Where issues can come up is if for any reason your local network is slow, it can delay the loading of the image thumbnails. Masonry JS is not able to account for that though, so when it calculates the layout (when images have not yet loaded) it does not allow the proper space, so as images fill in, they appear to “stack” or overlap.

With this in mind, I would like you to run the following network test: http://www.speedtest.net/

Can you tell me the results you get for:

    – Latency
    – Download speed
    – Upload speed

    Thanks for the additional info!

Thank you for very detail information!

It is good to hear that the issue is only occasional. I will be OK.

I assume that the homepage thumbnail is using the featured image. Then, if I resize the featured image of each portfolio, will it helps?

Speed result: ping 15ms, download 27Mbps, upload 25Mbps

  • Those network speeds are fast, but it could be intermittent moments of slowness causing this as well. Or simply a network call failing or a process timing out at the wrong moment.

Then, if I resize the featured image of each portfolio, will it helps?

That won’t make any difference. The full-size featured image is only loaded in the single-page view of a project. On the portfolio page we automatically load a resized version that’s only the size you see on the screen.
