Orvis Theme Previous/Next Button Question

On our portfolio/home page (https://weshawryshart.wordpress.com/) when you click on the first image the button at the bottom says “previous” rather than “next”. To me this seems backwards because of the way the images are laid out on the portfolio page. Can you help me make this switch?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

On Orvis, portfolio projects are displayed on the portfolio page, and on a page with the portfolio page template assigned, in reverse-chronological order, according to their publish dates.

So when viewed on a large screen the order goes as follows:

top row: most recent, second most recent, third most recent
next row: fourth most recent, fifth most recent, sixth most recent
    etc.

Using the previous button adds the project immediately preceding the project that you’re viewing. So it’s working correctly.

Can you help me make this switch?

Changing the word “Previous” to “Next” in the button the you refer to might be possible with CSS customization. However, Custom CSS is only available on the WordPress.com Premium, Business, and eCommerce plans. If you have one of the those plans, and want to see if that modification can be accomplished, then I’d suggest adding a “modlook” tag to the sidebar at right here to call for staff attention.

I decided to call for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

  • Hi there,

Next/previous links on posts and projects are based on publication time, not on the order that posts/projects appear on the site, the latter being reverse-chronological.

The first image on your front page is for the portfolio project, https://weshawryshart.wordpress.com/portfolio/when-it-really-doesnt-matter-anymore/

That is the project that was published on your site most recently. In other words, it’s the last project on the site, not the first, and all other projects were published before it, so it is correct that it would only show a “previous” link, as chronologically the second post on the page was published before the first one.

    @kokkieh,

Next/previous links on posts and projects are based on publication time, not on the order that posts/projects appear on the site

When I say, “Using the previous button adds the project immediately preceding the project that you’re viewing,” I mean immediately preceding in time. So we’re saying the same thing, though my explanation may not have been sufficiently clear.

I called for staff attention with regard to the possibility of changing the word “Previous” to “Next,” because even if @ashleyposhluns understands the reason for the links being labeled “Previous” she may still wish to have them say “Next” instead for her own reasons.

  • she may still wish to have them say “Next” instead for her own reasons.

Right, this can be done either via a plugin that will allow changing a particular string or by creating a child theme. Both options would be available in plan Business.

Custom CSS is not the best way to do that, but we might give it a try. @ashleyposluns how you’d like to proceed. Also, note that with your Premium plan, you can reach support via Live Chat directly from https://wordpress.com/help/contact
