Other computers can see my blog but mine can't.

Just mapped a new URL for my blog. It works great on other computers but my computer only gets the standard WP sample blog. What am I missing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • After making DNS changes such as when you map a domain, it can take 24-72 hours for the changes to fully propagate so they’re visible throughout the entire Internet.

If you still can’t see your site on your own domain after this time, you may need to flush your computer’s DNS cache. Just let me know if this happens and I can help you out with that.

What I don’t understand is why other computers (including my ipad) were seeing my blog at the correct URL, but I couldn’t on my own computer?

This afternoon I changed the nameservers back to blue host.com but then I couldn’t even see it on my ipad. I changed them back, but I’m wondering if I restarted some clock on the changes showing up.

How would I flush my computer’s DNS cache? I have a MBA running Safari on OS X 10.7.5.

  • Yes, every time you change the name servers you do “restart the clock” on the time it takes for the DNS to propagate again. :-)

If you still can’t see your site after 24-72 hours have passed after the latest name server update, you can try flushing the DNS cache by using the first Terminal command here, under “OS X Mountain Lion or Lion”

OK, I’ll try flushing the DNS cache just in case. Why would this DNS server problem affect only my computer and not any others?

  • DNS settings can be cached (temporarily stored) on an individual computer the same way images can be cached in an individual browser. Sometimes the information gets “stuck” and doesn’t update when it should.

Let me know how it goes.

It works! Thanks for your help.

  • Great, glad to hear it!
