Other Dubious Link

I have a different dubious link than the previous one posted. I have an incoming link from what appears to be a bot blog. The blog claims to be IT related, but all its’ posts are merely preview links to other blog’s posts about a wide variety of topics (my blog is entirely a sports fan blog), with dozens or “posts” a day.

I’m not concerned as I was not solicited for anything nor was there any attempt I could detect to download anything. Does anybody know what the purpose of this blog is?

  • It’s probably spam. There’s a lot of that kind of thing around. You can’t control who links to you, nor can we. Best thing you can do is ignore it.

I’ve had a blogger blog for almost three years and never saw anything like this at all. Then I created a wordpress blog a month ago and have since had several different articles linked to by four different “blogs” like the one mentioned above. I have checked the “not searchable” option under privacy, so I don’t know how these blogs got to mine. All of these fake blogs are hosted by wordpress.

Hosted by wordpress? If that’s the case, you should report them. However, I suspect they are hosted elsewhere and are using the downloadable version of WordPress.

You probably didn’t notice them on the Blogger blog because you didn’t have reporting of incoming links and didn’t use tags or categories. It’s very common on all blog platforms, but moreso on those that use tags and categories because the bots just scrape every blog using that tag or category.

I found them through technorati.com, not through incoming links, and my blogger blog does use categories. However, I didn’t consider the possibility that they are using WordPress but not hosted by WordPress. That’s more likely to be the case.

I figured this was some kind of spam related project and will just ignore it. I’ve never had open comments and akismet has STILL blocked a bunch of spam comments from my site. Amusingly, my post is ‘credited’ to a completely fake name which does link to my blog after clicking.

I was just curious what the ‘purpose’ of the linking blog would be in a spammer context? A site to link back to so the bot could post comments? A word bank for generating Spamusement-worthy email subjects?

The bot blog claimed some sort of WordPress affiliation. If it is <b>hosted</b> by WordPress I’m lighting it up.
