Our Place In The Cosmos

Can this be directed to Liz Karkowski (who has spent the worst year of her life with seven pages in the last thread, trying to help this 81yo guy with a slow brain and almost no “Intuition” with IT things.) If she’s willing. She got me almost to the finish. Just still the BLOG Page: For me to understand how it works. Separate threads with commentors? Where a list of my Past original Posts can be shown; Etc. Allan Avery

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Allan, Liz isn’t available today. But I can help.

You have a static home page at our-place-in-the-cosmos.com — the message there won’t change unless you actually edit the page.

But you also have a blog page.

When you add new articles to your site as blog posts, the latest ones will show up in a list here:
    https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/blog/ .

Each blog post can also show up on its own page (not in a list) like this:
    https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/2017/11/07/blog/

If you’re willing, I recommend looking at the videos here:
    https://learn.wordpress.com/the-movie/

The second one talks about posts in depth :)

Liz Karkowski, Can I start a new thread with you for our-place-in-the-cosmos.com ? (I just started a new thread with Supernovia for the Homeowner Association Website.) With the Blog I just need help with the BLOG Page. Understanding how in can work, and probably removing the two Posts that are already there. Can you help me with that, still? Thanks,
    Allan

  • Allan, Liz isn’t here today either, but I’ll send her a note so you know you’ve requested her attention in this thread.

  • Good morning –

    I’m back Allan :)

The Blog page is the designated home for your posts to be published on. There are 2 options, you can configure the site so that the posts publish to your front page of the site, or you can designate a blog page. You chose the second option some time ago.

When you go to your site, click on the Blog page from the menu, and here is where all of your published posts are going to be found.

If you want to delete the posts that are currently showing you can certainly do that.

What you need to do is to open up your posts. Click on

    My Sites > Posts

Here you’ll see the published posts listed. Click on the 3 dots off to the right hand side of the posts.

It’s going to look like this: https://cloudup.com/cpCmCBZGsqP

After you click on the three dots to the right you’ll see a few options in a drop down menu. Click on the Edit option: https://cloudup.com/cpCmCBZGsqP

Now, you have opened up your post editor. You can make changes from this screen.

To remove the posts from the Blog page you need to revert them to draft status. Currently they are published. Find the gear icon and click it.

In the menu that comes up you’ll want to click on Status. This is how you revert the post to a draft. The third box down will say “revert to draft” select that and click save.

Repeat these steps for the second post.

Write back with any trouble. As always, happy to help :)

    Liz, THANKS!!

One “general Q first. Is there a way to your replies “UP” on my “forum screen” screen, while I “go away” and open the Blog site to remember something there. When I have go back to reopen recover your instructions, it’s time consuming and I have to write a lot of notes to myself to try and remember one or the other. Maybe not possible, but if it is, how?

Back on the topic. I followed you instructions, and it worked, once. I was able to delete the one blank Post. Then when I tried again, and I didn’t get the same links on the screen as the first. I’d go back to My Sites, and on the left column I’s click Post – Add. (I didn’t see plain “Posts”) It did go to a screen with the remaining two posts. I clicked on the 3 vertical dots, and the “ https://cloudup.com/……….. didn’t come up. I tried manually entering that but saw no place to do that. What am I doing wrong?

What I wanted most to do was Keep the two remaining post, but reverse their Order. The “OKaaay …….. “ one first, followed by the other one. And get them both in the same Font. (I tried making the Font the same, and itdidn’t work.) I they Can’t be reversed, I’d keep the “OKaaay ….. if I could get all of it in the same font. And then I re-post the other one.

Lastly, I really don’t understand how the Blog page works. Do my new, “original” Posts stay there, unless I remove them? If a reader returns a Comment, do my post and the Comment then go somewhere, for further back and forth? Is there List of all my former Posts alone somewhere? Most likely there’s step by step “tutorial” I could read for that. Please give me the link to that to, economize on your time a bit.

    Allan

  • Hi Allan –

Yes, you can keep these instructions opened up in one browser tab and then open up a new browser tab to view your WordPress.com site. Then you can click back and forth between the two tabs.

Opening a new link in a new tab can be done by right clicking and then selecting the ‘open in new tab’ option. Using ctrl+t will do the trick as well. Then you’d just type the URL of where you want to go in the bar.

I don’t understand the second paragraph. What exactly was giving you trouble?

Post order can be changed by editing the published dates/times. Otherwise, your newest post is always going to show atop the post list on your Blog page. Most folks keep an ongoing list of posts there. You don’t have to remove them from the Blog page.

To answer your questions about the Blog page:

Do my new, “original” Posts stay there, unless I remove them?

Yes, they’ll stay put on the Blog page. Visitors can scroll down to see multiple posts that you have published.

If a reader returns a Comment, do my post and the Comment then go somewhere, for further back and forth?

The comments will thread together and stay in one place. Each reply will create an indentation so you can see that it’s a reply.

Is there List of all my former Posts alone somewhere?

Yep. Click on My Sites > Posts

More information about Posts can be found in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/

    Liz,
Hi, and Merry Christmas! I’ve been diverted onto the Homeowner Association Website case for awhile, but I’m now Off that. Another Member turned up to take on that. So here I’m back on the My Blog case. In view of your advice above, could you look at my BLOG Page. I’m wondering whether the “how it works” text there is Accurate. Specifically, whether or not there can be a link to a separate, by Title only, list of all Post and Comment streams. I don’t think there one there now but that’s what I’d want. What I interpret in your 2nd and 3rd answers above is the that New Posts, and successive Comments on them, all stack up in full in a single column. Do I get that wrong? A second Q: Am I correct in understanding that, to make the Font on the two Posts there now the same, I’ll need to convert the first one (the “OhhKaaay” one) back to “draft” to make it like the other one? That’s the bold size font I’d like on all Posts. I’m still fumbling with the “switch to draft” instructions, because the http://cloudup.com/ …… link doesn’t come up, but I do get to a screen where I can do it. Feels like I Almost Ready to fly off on my own. But one more Q relating to the page headers that, I’ll send later. THANK YOU!! Allan

  • In view of your advice above, could you look at my BLOG Page. I’m wondering whether the “how it works” text there is Accurate

Can you add a screen shot of the “how it works” text? I am not seeing that on my side.

You can add a widget that will list your posts in the side bar. Take a look at these options:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/

    Display WordPress Posts Legacy Widget

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/recent-comments-widget/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/recent-posts-widget/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/top-posts-widget/

The cloudup link is a screen shot from my computer that shows you what you should see on yours. Are you able to revert the posts to drafts?
