Our website is gone – domain renewal issue?

I run my school e-newspaper, but suddenly it is inaccessible and gone from the internet, I believe because the domain expired before we could renew it. Is there any way to recover the website and the newspaper or is all its content gone forever?

  • Hi! I’m sorry that happened; it actually expired quite a while ago, but just now went into domain redemption. And the site isn’t hosted here so we can’t help you point the content to a new address.

The registrar charges an extra fee to get the domain back. We’ll send an invoice.

If that’s not doable (with it being a school newspaper, I do get that) you can wait for the domain expiration process to finish. That takes several weeks and is risky:

    Domain Expiration

Let us know if you pay it, or if you want to try waiting it out / working with your host to change the address, let us know that too and we’ll remove the invoice.

  • I sent the invoice. Let us know if you have more questions!

Thank you for your help! I’m fine with the costs, I’m mostly just concerned about getting the newspaper back.

With renewing the domain, does it reestablish the whole website? Will the content and structure be available again or are they gone forever? Is there any way to know before we renew the domain?

I know too there are two websites linked to this WordPress – we’re looking to renew ecthehub.com not ecthehubdotcom.wordpress (that is an older version)

  • Your site is not gone – all your site’s content should still be on GoDaddy’s servers where you appear to be hosting it, as long as your hosting with them hasn’t also expired. But at the moment there’s no way to reach it there as there’s no domain connected to that site.

Once the domain is restored, your site should start working again, but it will be best to check with GoDaddy directly whether everything is still all good on their end. You might also need to reconnect the domain to your site over there once the domain is restored on ours.

I restored the domain this morning, but the website isn’t showing online yet – does it take some time to come back into functioning?
Also, I checked our email, but don’t see anything about/from GoDaddy, and I’m not sure where to go regarding our domain with them – do you know what I should do on that end?
Thank you both for your help, I appreciate it so much, this tiny little newspaper is so important to us

  • ecthehubonline – You will want to work with GoDaddy on that.

I spoke with GoDaddy and they were unable to access the account from their end and they redirected me to speak again with WordPress – the person I spoke with tried to restore the account suggested that something within the hosting needs to be updated, which they said WordPress should be able to help with reconnecting the domain to the account? Still, when I try to access the website it says “Can’t reach this page,” and the website is down from the WP Admin side of thing as well.

  • We should work on getting the domain restored first, which is what we have the ability to help with, and that should assist you in regaining access to your site that is hosted with GoDaddy. I see that you have paid for the domain, so I will reach out to our registry partner and get that restored for you.

It may take up to 24-48 hours, but I will reply here to let you know that we were able to restore the domain.

    Thanks,

Sounds great – thank you for your help

  • We will be here if you need more help. Just let us know. Be well and stay safe :)

  • Hi there,

The domain has been restored! Please check and make sure everything is set on your end. Thank you!

Ugh FANTASTIC. Everything looks good. Thank you so much I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it!!

  • Ahh, I’m glad you got it back. From here I’d recommend one of two things:

    – Transfer the domain to your current provider so you’ve got billing coming from one place, so renewals are a bit easier to manage. Here’s how:
    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

    or

    – Set up auto renewal here, and make sure you’re using a contact address where you’ll be sure to notice any renewal failures. You can set up auto renew here:
    https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

Hoping this helps & that you’re all safe and well there!
