outgong links erratic and often fail
-
The forums suggest that outgoing links are a chronic problem. I often try to link from my blog to a magazine or newspaper article using the ‘link feature in HTML mode. Sometimes the link works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. Does anyone else still have this problem and is there anything i can do to link proof my site so it always works?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We cannot help you without: the URL of your blog, starting with http, the link you are trying to put in, and a description of each of the steps you’re using to put it in.

Yes, it is http;//pompuss.wordpress.com and I’ve been having this problem off and on for months now.
Usually I delete posts where the links have not worked and rely upon readers to copy and paste an URL instead but this morning I’ve done two short test posts to show you what is happening – or rather, not happening.
‘testing…testing…. I tried to insert http://www.newstatesman.com/healthcare-and-pharmaceuticals/2012/03/laboratory-animals-transport by using a piece of code given me in an earlier forum post, i.e. at the word “here”
testing..testing 2 used the same URL with HTML mode. I positioned the cursor immediately before a highlighted “here” then clicked on the link button on the top of the box. This gave me the pop up box where I pasted the URL and checked the “open in a new window” tab before clicking Add link.
Sometimes one of these techniques will work but not every time and I’d appreciate help on what I’m doing wrong.
Using the chain icon in visual mode has never worked for me.
I use a mac and the wordpress theme is Twenty eleven with minimal (4) plug ins. -

Oh drat again, I see that the system swallows code, so I hope that what I have written makes sense to you.

I’ve rechecked my posts where links have been successful and in all of them I’ve done it manually, just as I have a few minutes ago in a new post titled “The Rise of the Factory Mouse”.
Is there a way I can use the automatic link buttons or should I resign myself to doing it he long way? -
Hi to raincoaster, auxclass and timethief,
Further checking of my posts showed that the New Statesman link that was causing such trouble had an extra http:// in front of it on their website. So I removed it and guess what – the link worked!
I’ll continue to insert links manually but if there is an easy way to use the auto system I’d be grateful for the information.
In the meantime, thank you all very much for your time, I’m now a happier cat,

The easy way is to put links in the way you have been doing BUT strip out the initial http:// which WP puts in automatically. You were not removing it before and that’s why you got two of them.

Thanks Raincoaster. I didn’t know that WP put the http:// into URLs. Will follow your suggestion.
