Outside Advertisers contacted me – Support was not helpful

  • Unknown's avatar

So I’m posting this again because so far my experience with the support has just left me more confused.

    I have a premium blog
I am in the WordsAds program
I pay for my domain name which is a .com, not a .org

An outside company contacted me on their own and asked about advertising on my site. I was told by WordPress that I would need to self-host my blog and that by doing so I would lose the WordsAds program. I would also have to pay more to a hosting company.

So if I went that route, would I also still pay WordPress for….

    My domain name
    My premium blog

Also if I went that route what would happen to the credit I’ve so far accrued through WordAds? I’ve not yet met the threshold of $100.

I honestly have no idea what to tell the company that wants to advertise as I found most of the links sent to me via support to be even more confusing and contradictory.

And my last question, lately I’ve noticed strange ads running on my images. Is this also part of the WordAds program? They look similar to the ads that show up on a free site.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • An outside company contacted me on their own and asked about advertising on my site.

Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed, that includes companies that reach out to you directly. For full details, please see:

    Advertising

    http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. Please see this link to learn about the differences:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

    Hosting

So if I went that route, would I also still pay WordPress for….

    My domain name
    My premium blog

Your domain is registered through us, so if you wished to continue using julietjeskeblog.com on your self-hosted blog, you would need to either continue to renew the domain registration with us or transfer the domain to another registrar.

If you moved to a self-hosted blog, there would be no need to renew your Premium bundle here.

Also if I went that route what would happen to the credit I’ve so far accrued through WordAds? I’ve not yet met the threshold of $100.

When you’re ready, please contact the WordAds team via http://wordads.co/contact/ and a manual payout for the remaining balance will be arranged.

And my last question, lately I’ve noticed strange ads running on my images. Is this also part of the WordAds program? They look similar to the ads that show up on a free site.

That’s a limited test we’re running, announced on the private WordAds Group blog. We can disable them if you’d like us to.

Do you have access to that private blog? You would have received an invitation when you joined WordAds, but I can send a new one to you.

Also, please note that you can generally get a quicker reply to your WordAds questions by contacting the WordAds team directly via http://wordads.co/contact/

Are you the only person who works in support? Honestly. Same guy, same face….this is disappointing. At least this time though the advice makes more sense since I spelled it out much more specifically for you. I have more questions.

I purchased a theme in 2011 through WordPress, from what I’ve found in your support section, if I move my blog to a self-hosted site, I will lose my theme. So what exactly does that mean? Do I lose images? Do I lose the fonts? Do I completely lose my layouts? Is it all going to be the same text but same font, same size. I have nearly 200 entries and I would hate to have to redo all them by hand. I have built two websites, and I have Dreamweaver but will I have to completely start over if I lose my theme?

Are you the only person who works in support? Honestly. Same guy, same face….this is disappointing.

I am a Volunteer and I know the answers to your questions. Your nastiness is not disappointing it’s offensive.

We love positive and productive discussions, so please keep comments on the topics at hand and not on other members of the community. Thanks!

To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported. (See 3 below. )

Premium Themes that are licensed for WordPress.com use only cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/ If you have purchased a premium theme you will have to contact the theme designer and request a WordPress.org version of it. If you have done any CSS editing on the WordPress.COM version then you will have to redo it on the WordPress.ORG version of the theme.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/

    2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
    http://wordpress.org/themes/
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/

    3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.

    4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

    5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

NOTE: Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Also note WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

  • Are you the only person who works in support? Honestly. Same guy, same face….this is disappointing.

I’m not the only guy who works here, but I work very closely with all of the WordAds users like yourself, so I’m usually the first one to these questions, especially if they’re sent via the correct support form: http://wordads.co/contact/

At least this time though the advice makes more sense since I spelled it out much more specifically for you.

Thank you for listing out your concerns this time so I could address them.

I purchased a theme in 2011 through WordPress, from what I’ve found in your support section, if I move my blog to a self-hosted site, I will lose my theme. So what exactly does that mean?

It simply means that you will not be able to take your purchased theme with you. Your content, text, images, etc will not be affected. You won’t need to start over, you can choose any of the thousands of themes available for self-hosted WordPress blogs. You can even purchase the same theme later directly from the theme’s designer for use on your self-hosted blog.

Well this is my second ticket. The first one was private and not at all helpful. I spelled out the problem and the response I got was as if I had a free account, which I don’t have – I also waited hours for that response. That’s going to make a person frustrated. I also have called two of the hosting companies, and with a short phone call all of my questions were answered in a couple of minutes. Now I have random people calling me nasty, when I’ve wasted quite a bit of time on this, and I still don’t understand it.

I listed my concerns the first time, in the first ticket. I basically just said the same thing only using the terminology you used. Honestly I have two websites that I designed and built and host on GoDaddy. The whole experience was much easier. I called two hosting companies, one has fairly strict rules about profanity, the other does not. I got several questions answered in a matter of minutes. This is not the most efficient system, I’m sure it’s cheaper but not very user friendly.

    I still don’t understand it.

I posted a step by step summary of how to proceed above.
Exactly which of the steps here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/outside-advertisers-contacted-me-support-was-not-helpful?replies=6#post-1787693 do you fail to comprehend?

  • and I still don’t understand it

What other questions do you have in addition to the answers that I gave 14 minutes ago?
