Outside entity with personal identification to reapply for domain

contacted by outside domain registry to pay for domain registry
Last night, I received an email from an outside entity not associated with WordPress, because my domain (The life and times of Jerome) had expired. Funny that they had my name address and all of my personal identification from you on their fax application. I checked my domain here, and it was expired. I re-upped this morning so the domain is still mine. I was just concerned that someone other than WordPress collected my personal data from you and sent me a request to renew my domain with them instead of you. Not to mention they wanted more than $200.00 to renew for more than a year.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy,
WordPress.com does not share the personal information of users except when absolutely required by law (and even then, we push back as hard as we can).
When purchasing a domain name, registration information enters a public WHOIS database (see https://who.wildwestdomains.com/WhoIs.aspx?prog_id=wildwestdomains&domain=thelifeandtimesofjerome.com ) that is required by the ICANN regulations the govern domain names.
You can enable Private Registration via the Store->My Upgrades page in your dashboard, which changes your registration information to a proxy to keep the information private.
As for the offer itself, it is a total and absolute scam. They actually do provide registration services, but at a price that beyond anything reasonable.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or need anything else.

Then I wonder how did they get my name, my address, and my contact information that is on my account in the first place? And they sent it to my personal email account ! How did they know my domain was expired and then contacted me to sign up with a domain registry service that charges exorbitant prices ??? Either my account was hacked or this provider has ways of farming information from our system over to their system? I’ve never had this happen before on either one of my blogs on the service here.

Hi,
I’ve fixed the error and privacy is now enabled on that domain. Since privacy wasn’t enabled on the domain until now, that’s part of the publicly available information for domain names, so your account was not hacked.
If you have any other questions or need anything else, please let me know.
