Overwhelmed…
-
Hello!
I am new to this site and the idea of creating a website… I would love to get some direction on a theme I should use… Here are my needs, I am not a blogger, I have a small commercial casting studio that I would like to create a site for that would allow for several pages: a home page – letting people know who we are and what we do, a technology page – letting people know what services we offer, a rate page – letting people know our rates at the studio, a photos page – showing pictures of the studio and finally a contact page – letting people know our address, phone number a map to the studio and contact e-mail… We will not be selling anything, just providing information…
Can some guide me as to how to start and which themes would be right for us?
Thank you very much!!

You can search for a good theme on http://themes.wordpress.com using the drop-down box
If you pick Subject on the right you can choose Photography or Portfolio for example. Then you can narrow down by color and number of columns. It looks like you want the Widget feature for the map and contact details, and probably 2 columns.
Most free themes charge you to change the font and only have one color, or a very limited set unless you pay more so it’s pretty quick to find one that looks ok. Can you preview themes from your blog from https://wordpress.com/themes/5thstreetstudios.wordpress.com
Changing themes is very easy and it should remember all your settings from the last theme.

Hi there,
Your needs are not at all unusual. Every day we get new bloggers here at WordPress.COM who do not understand that a blog is a website posting here. This is all semantics and blog structure.A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.
What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

If you are feeling overwhelmed it may be because you have not used the step by step tutorial that Staff have linked to the bottom of your Admin page at http://learn.wordpress.com
See also the “Video Quick Start” tutorial http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also linked to on the bottom of your Admin page.
Here are some basics I will share with you.
To verify blog ownership of a WordPress.com hosted blog with the major search engines you must use this process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
Note: Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don’t feel panicky about this please.WordPress.com automatically supplies sitemaps for our blogs to search engines – we do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines
It can take weeks for search engines to index content in a new blog and/or to re-index content under a new URL. For more information read > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/01/21/omg-i-cant-find-my-blog-on-google/ and we cannot help with search engine issues. http://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/
re: front page error message found on every new .wordpress.com blog
Nothing Found
It seems we cannot find what you are looking for. Perhaps try a search? There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
For creating a post see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#publish-a-new-post
For creating a page see here
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/#create-a-new-page
To create a custom menu see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
To add your Pages into your custom menu see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pagesFor editing see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/re: changing themes
Also note that every theme has a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site.
Example: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfifteen/
http://twentyfifteendemo.wordpress.com/Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
