Own Doamin Mapping
-
Hello,
I have just paid for my own domain, and understand it can take up to 72 hours before I see my domain online.
Is this right?
When I do domain mapping now, it says my domain can’t be found. Presummably this is because 72 hours hasn’t yet occured.

If I purchased the Domain Mapping + Domain Registration through wordpress.com, pressumably I do not have to change the DNS – because wordpress would do that for me for my own domain, right ?

Just purchasing (registering) a domain should show up as a “Parked” or “Under Construction” (outside of WordPress.COM anyway) as soon as the registration is completed – – a name by itself is not a web site – it then needs to be mapped to a host of some type where you can put content on (build the web site).
Registration and Domain Mapping are separate items.
I have not registered a name through WordPress.COM but until you do the Domain Mapping you should not see much (many people have more than one blog and WordPress.com does not know where you want the name to go for sure)

I just started my blog this week and had gotten a domain name before starting a blog on WP. However I followed the instructions posted above and just had to go into the account management section in GoDaddy and type in the 3 entries for domain mapping, which were:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM.Very easy to do and my domain name was mapped right away.

Thank you so much for the replies… Does this mean, a new domain (with wordpress.com- that I purchased) needs to have the DNS changed? Or will wordpress do this automatically ?

If you purchase a domain here and map it to a blog here, the DNS records are set automatically for you.
