own domain and no control over cnames etc

  if i make my domain to wordpress using wordpress dns servers i cant even EDIT the cnames on my domain, why?
  makes no sense, why not just make it so i can just add a nwgat.wordpress.com to my domain cname much like amazon aws does with s3
  as in if i have domain x264.nwgat.net i can point it to cname x264.nwgat.net.s3.amazonaws.com

  why do we have to pay for a domain service that are missing 99.99% of the dns control
