This may be of help http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/09/27/edit-my-templates/
    (1) interactive linked image map header banner is a no go.
    (2) interactive linked affiliates marquee in the footer is a no go.
    (3) one discreet affiliates link in a text widget in the sidebar is okay.

The short answer as I understand it is: affiliate links are ways to monetize your blog, and at WordPress.com, a free service, they are not allowed. You can use affiliate links if you are part of the $250 per month VIP program, or if you go to WordPress.org and download the WordPress software and find hosting somewhere else.

WordPress.com is a free blogging service offered for personal use, nonprofit use, and business use that is not directly monetized (ie PR, posting articles that make you more of an authority in your field, that sort of thing is okay; using your blog itself to make money is not).

There are more answers if you use the search forum box and put in “affiliate” or “adsense” or “Amazon”.

And of course you should read the link Timethief gave you. That’s the best source of info.

If it’s really important to you that you are able to edit your template and have advertising and affiliate links then there is another choice you can make. You can either self host a free blog you download from wordpress.org (different code base from our blogs here) or you can hire a web host to do it for you. To help bloggers understand the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org there is pink sticky post from the head of the forum called “please read me first before posting” http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1

Is it possible to use <marquee>text</marquee> inside wordpress.com free blog? If it is OK, can somebody show how is the right syntax for doing that? TQ

Try it; if it doesn’t work, the answer is no. You can use a variety of header styles within a post, by using the advanced toolbar (last icon on the right on top of the post box).
