  If a fellow has a website that also has a citation on Wikipedia, in this case one made by the fellow himself, then everytime he goes to the relevant Wiki page (via Google), and clicks the citation link, and gets onto his own site – well bingo – I’ve got another stat, referenced from wiki.
  All I need is 10,000 people to do this for me a couple of times and the site will be bigger than Ben Hur. So then can I do ads?

  Unless I’m misunderstanding you, that sounds like the correct behavior.

  Arriving at your site through a different site should record the original site as the referrer:
