Oxygen theme – change to 2 columns?

I just installed the Oxygen theme and enabled the Showcase feature however I was wondering if it was possible to get ride of either the left or right sidebar – I know the left ‘sidebar’ is infact the secondary menu option.
When I have no widgets in my secondary menu (left column) it defaults to showing ‘categories’ and ‘archives’ – is there a way to get rid of these options so nothing shows? ie. the blog post main column takes up the secondary menu space?
Hoepfully that makes sense and someone can help me out. Thanks.

Put a text widget in the primary or secundary column. Empty title and body field.
