Oxygen Theme – Facebook Thumbnails Crop Out a Third of Image

    Hey there. I’m having an issue where Facebook will more often than not crop out most of my featured image. It retains the dimensions but just uses the upper third (estimated). I have auto-share to FB on but it occasionally works right. What I end up doing is erasing that post, reposting and adding the image to FB directly and removing the thumbnail image generated by the link (which looks right until posted).

    Unfortunately if someone shares my FB post it’ll look right but if they click on the FB share button on the blog or they cut and paste the URL they get the jacked up image even after I try and debug using FB’s tool.

    I tried searching the forums and haven’t seen anything so I apologize if this has already been covered but I’m at an impasse here and could use a hand.

    Could you give me a couple of links to posts where the image wasn’t shared correctly so I can take a look?

    On that post, this is the image being served up to Facebook – if you view the source on the page in your browser you can see this:

    Unfortunately there’s no way for WordPress.com to control whether Facebook decides to crop the image or not – we can only provide an image that meets their minimum dimensions.

    Using the Facebook debugging tool will tell you if Facebook sees any issues with the image and gives you a preview of how it will look:

    I noticed that the preview doesn’t show the cropping you see on the actual Facebook share, so the preview is evidently only approximate.

    Yeah, I just re-checked it and unless you did something (I didn’t actively) it appears that patience is a virtue. I know this isn’t a WP question but do you think it’s possible that perhaps Facebook straightens it out? I’ve had older posts realign when I revisit them on FB and I’ve had some stay. When I debug it often appears right when I go to share the link but when I press share it goes back to the offending thumbnail.

    I have a feeling this is more likely a FB issue than a WP issue at this point. As always, I appreciate the input…

    Just an FYI – the last two articles did this. I had been just waiting and FB would correct the images on their own but these last two seem to have stuck to the undesirable crop. Again, this is probably a FB thing but I just wanted to log it should someone else have this come up. Top two posts here:
