Packages instead of upgrades

Wouldn’t it be beneficial to WordPress.com to have their own plans like GoDaddy etc? I would think that .COM users would support something like this and it would bring in a ton of money for WordPress. Maybe there’s some technical thing that I don’t understand.

Has WordPress ever thought about having their own packages instead of sprinkles of upgrades?
Like a package of 10 GB of storage, e-mail, Video/Audio upload, CSS customization and plug-in upload capabilities for $5.99 a month or something like that.WordPress,Org would be used to integrate the plug-in option. Not sure if this entirely makes sense.

I guess it’s because I want to go the .ORG route, but I don’t want the headache.

I believe that each upgrade is “a package”. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/upgrades/ If you click the individual links for upgrades you will find an upgrade price and an exact description of what the upgrade entitles you to. Each upgrade is for one blog only and for the term of one year when renewal is required if continuance is desired.

Unfortunately many bloggers give free rein to their imaginations and do not read this:

The Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.

P.S. I do not use godaddy for web hosting or anything else and never will. This is due to the negative experiences many of my blogging freinds have endured with that web host prior to their migration to other web hosting services. It’s also due to the fact that I like the web hosting service I have now from A Small Orange.

The way it’s done provides more flexibility for us.

If upgrades were lumped together into packages, there would be complaints along the lines of:
“I only need a little more space! Why am I being charged for domain mapping as well!”

I can see the logic of packages, but haven’t seen much demand for them at WordPress.com. I don’t think Automattic have either.

I have seen lots of complaining about things not being free.

This is just my two cents, but I think WP.com as an organization likes to limit the amount of fuss WP.com is to Automattic. They don’t want to be a full-service host, because there are literally thousands out there already. When you’re ready for entire packages of upgrades, you’re probably ready to go self-hosted.

Quote from Toni, CEO of Automattic. “We didn’t want to [offer a package model] because we wanted to constantly launch new features and charge for them individually,” Schneider said. “It gives users a choice to just pick the ones that they want.”
