Page and Post password box not showing

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a password protected Page and one password protected Post. Yesterday the password box showed so I could enter the password, but today I click on the Page or Post and the password box is not showing. It also appears to be showing the content to any users even though it’s supposed to be password protected. Any thoughts?

Once you log in, the password is stored in a cookie on your computer. That’s why you see it. It’s not open to everyone.

I was wondering if that was it… very helpful, thank you!

Could I check with you guys if that means that if someone enters my protected posts on a shared computer, the password would be stored in that computer and that makes my protected posts visible to anyone who would be using that computer?

No – they need to be logged in as the person with access. So if your friend forgets to log out – yes.

Oh, but why is it that when I visit my blog without logging into wp, I can see my protected posts already? My friend affirms that she could see my protected posts without typing in the password as it’s already stored in her cookie. :(

Is there anything I can do about this? I do know of friends who use shared computers and I really don’t want uninvited readers for my protected posts.

are you sure that involves clicking “log out” in the dashboard?

My friend doesn’t even have a wp account, while I’m quite certain I always log out after I’m done with wp stuffs. You mean it’s only stored in cookie of those with wp accounts?

I didn’t think you could log in to a wp-blog without a wp account.
Cookies and sessions for log-ins should “self-destruct” if told so – by logging out.
That, at least, is what I have learned…

Hmmm. I hope I didn’t confuse you when I say protected posts. For what I know, protected posts merely requires a password to gain access to them while private wp-blogs do need wp-usernames to gain access.

Thanks Boblets for answering my queries btw, I really really appreciate it. :)

ah- ok, I see. I haven’t tried the protected post thing myself, so someone else have to answer how it really works – but I would imagine that there should be a logout or some such. Sorry for mixing it up.

Lol, it’s okay, really thanks for replying. :) :) :)

I was trying to do the same thing today. I created a post with a password required to view but it seems to still be viewable. The password box showed up the one time but the next time it was out there for anyone to see.

I logged out and came back into the blog without signing in to wp to check and it still is viewable.

I went back to edit the post, checked “unpublished” and it seemed to kick it back into “publish”. So I was forced to delete it to keep it from being viewed until I could figure out what the problem is.

I want to be able to create a post that requires a password to view but that does not require me to add the viewer to a “list” of people who can view the post.

It just doesn’t seem to work like it should. Am I’m doing something wrong in setting it up?

Once you type in the correct password for the post or page, WordPress puts a cookie on your computer and the next time you go to the post or page, it will show without you having to enter the password. People who do not have the password, will see the sign in box and they will have to put in the correct password in order to see the page or post.

I thought it worked as described above by Boblet – that once I logged out and came back into view the blog without signing in, that it released that cookie etc. Apparently it doesn’t do that and those that have entered the password (non wp bloggers for instance) will still be able to view that post after that as long as the password cookie remains on their computer.

    Oh well.

    Thanks!

The cookie set for a password protected post is not dependent on being logged in or logged out. If you clear your cookies, then you will again have to enter the password in order to view the post.

Right now, logged in or logged out, I get the password field on your post since I don’t have the password. If I entered the password, then I would be able to see the post, logged in or logged out, until either I deleted my cookies, or you changed the password.
